ENID, Okla. - Kermit Reed (Kim) Ellis, 77, of Winfield, Kan., passed away at his home on Sunday, April 7, 2013. He was surrounded by those that love him.
Born Sept. 23, 1935, in Durant, Okla., Ellis was the son of Lena Belle Reed and B.F. Ellis. He was reared in Pryor and Shidler, Okla.
Ellis was joined in marriage with Janice Jo Monroe on Aug. 24, 1956, in Cherokee, Okla.
Ellis attended Oklahoma State University, where he ran track and played basketball, graduating in 1957.
He served in the United States Navy for 21 years, first as a naval pilot, then later in Naval Intelligence. His service included Japan, Vietnam, and several other posts across the United States.
Upon retirement from the Navy, he formed Ellis & Associates Insurance Agency in Cherokee, Okla., serving the community until 2002. During that time Ellis served as a board member and past president of the Alfalfa County Hospital Board, Cherokee Chamber of Commerce, and the Alfalfa Electric Cooperative.
Ellis received many honors and awards throughout his life. Some of the most meaningful include his induction into the Oklahoma State Track and Field Hall of Honor, his inclusion in the Daily Oklahoman/Tulsa Tribune Top 100 Collegiate Athletes of the Century, Cherokee Citizen of the Year, Grand Marshall of the Shidler Homecoming Parade, and being the voice of the Cherokee Chiefs.
Ellis spent his life investing in other peoples� lives in a variety of ways: youth league ball coach, youth chapel leader, Sunday School teacher, Lay Leader at FUMC, Cherokee, Okla., Kids Club in Cherokee, Okla., active team member in the Walk to Emmaus, and Kairos Prison Ministry to name a few.
He is survived by his wife, Janice of Winfield, Kan.; son, Cory Ellis of Cherokee, Okla.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kimberly and Justin Groom of Winfield, Kan., and Kirsten and Stan Pylant of Augusta, Ga.; five grandchildren, Jeremy Groom (Ilah), Kacie Lockyear (John), Kylie Groom, Brianna Pylant and Nate Pylant; six great-grandchildren, Autumn, Sakura, Marshall and Rhianna Groom, and Kirsty Jo and Marc Lockyear; and one sister, Peggy Miller of Lincolnville, Maine.
There are a multitude of others that loved him, including many nieces, nephews and friends and especially his caregivers, Sanona Tobar, Liz Amezcua, Amber Rozell, Leslie Hall and Hosey Harper. He treasured these relationships.
Memorials have been established with Rivercross Hospice and Cherokee United Methodist Church Kids Club. Donations may be made directly to the organization or sent to Miles Funeral Home, 4001 E. 9th Ave., Winfield, KS 67156.
