Cheri Faye (Montgomery) Doty, 85, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 26 within the warmth and compassion of Adams Parc with her entire family in Bartlesville.
Born on April 24, 1931 in Hugoton, Kansas to the late Dr. L.E. and Pebble Emaline (Wray) Montgomery of Pittsburg, KS. She married Donald D. Doty on June 14, 1952 and they lived out at the Rocking D Ranch. At the time, Cheri worked with Dorothy Glynn Adams to start a nursery school for the children of the Phillips executives in the Adams building. She was the highest paid member of the entire Doty Family. They then moved to Selfridge Air Force Base in Mount Clemens, Michigan while Don completed his service in the Air Force. After leaving Michigan they made their home in Bartlesville and Don started working at First National Bank where they made many life long friends.
Cheri loved to laugh and was a huge fan of the Carol Burnett Show. If you ever mentioned Tim Conway as a cat or Carol as Scarlett O'Hara she would laugh until she cried. It made growing up with her so much fun. Everyone that knew Cheri has experienced some of her care giving. It might have been when you were sick, had a baby, lost a loved one or just needed support. She loved taking care of people and did so to the very end.
She was fortunate enough to parlay a single Christmas gift to the La Verrene culinary school at the Greenbrier into an annual trip for over 10 years with her great friend Kay Markel. Celebrity Chefs included Rick Bayless, Michel Richard and Julia Child. Kay and Cheri always giggled about how much fun they had and always talked about the Gold Plate Dinner, held on the last day of the school.
Near the time that Don retired from the bank, they began taking an annual trip to Florence, Italy. They spent the month of October in the same apartment on the Piazza Santa Croce for almost 20 years. All of the shop keepers in their neighborhood knew them and looked forward to their annual visit.
Cheri was an avid reader and loved the library. As she continued to lobby for a new library she became one of the founding members of the Friends of the Bartlesville Public Library. This non-profit organization strives to stimulate interest and focus attention on the library needs that are outside the scope of the regular city budget and to generate an endowment for long-term needs. Cheri had so many great friends that meant so much to her. Her involvement at St. Luke's, Bible Study, in Silver Threads and with BABS completed her life. So many wonderful friends who cared about her so much.
Most of all Cheri loved being a wife, mother, grandmother and great- grandmother. There was nothing that gave her more joy than hugs and kisses from her family. She never forgot a birthday or an anniversary and relished every visit and phone call. She always made you feel good (and if you didn't it was your own fault.) We all thought she was the best in the world.
Funeral service will be held at 10:30 Friday at the St. Luke's Episcopal Church. She is preceded in death by her mother, father and brother (Ted Montgomery.) She is survived by her husband Donald (64 years) and her son John Doty of Chicago, Susan Keaton of Bartlesville and Mark Doty of Durango, Colorado; 6 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
Cremation arrangements were under the direction of the Stumpff Funeral Home & Crematory. Friends who wish may sign the online guestbook and leave condolences at www.stumpff.org.
