Velma A. (Barber) Dittmar

Sept. 19, 1940 ~ Aug. 21, 2006

A service will be at 2 p.m. today at First Baptist Church, Commerce, Texas, for Velma A. Dittmar, 65, Commerce, who died Aug. 21, 2006, at Presbyterian Hospital of Commerce. Rev. Rodney Williams and Rev. Jimmy Lee will officiate. 

She was born Sept. 19, 1940, in Carmon to William Dan and Viola Pearl Barber. She married Rev. Roy Lee Dittmar Aug. 14, 1962 in Cherokee.

She was a retired assistant to the administrator director of the library, where she worked for 32 years at TAMU- Commerce. She enjoyed canning fruits, vegetable and preserves. She also enjoyed visiting shut ins and other people in the community. She served a pastor's wife's duties. She also enjoyed doing crafts for fund raisers. She began teaching Sunday School at the age of 12 and continued for 54 years. She was a member of the Red Hatters, KOPS, TOPS, Mt. Zion Ladies Assoc. and former secretary to the director of technology USE Center (NASA) in Durant. She was a charter member of the University Office Personnel Association and received the Clerk for the Year Award (1996), Professional Achievement Award, (1996), 25-membership Recognition Award for U.O.P.A. (2002), 30-year recognition Texas A&M Commerce (Dec. 2004) First place winner, Division 3 from Take Off Pounds Sensibly Club (2005) and recently graduated into Keep Off Pounds Sensibly. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, son Randy Dittmar, and brothers Lester Barber and Clifford Barber. 

She is survived by her husband; children Rodney Dittmar and wife Renee, Dallas, Texas, Gordon Dittmar, Greenville, Texas, and Ralonda Dittmar, Brea, Calif.; grandchildren Randy Dittmar, Lewisville, Texas, Amanda Dittmar, Alvarado, Texas, and Ian Dittmar, Alvarado; brother Alvin Barber, Shattuck: sisters Rozella Lingle, Stockton, Mo., Luella Lee, Oletha, Kan., Milldred Moore, Blackwell, and Lillie Burnidge, Alba; several nieces, nephews and other relatives. 

Burial will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery with Jody Allen, Tommy Allender, Bill McDaniel, Brod Rollins, Lance Shackelford, Nickie Smith, Glendale Tucker and Craig Williams serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbears will be the men from Mt. Zion and Oakland churches. 

Memorial may be made to the Giddion International Assoc., the Epileptic Assoc. in Dallas or the Mt. Zion Ladies Assoc. 

Jones-Walker & Sons Funeral Home, Commerce, is handling the arrangements.
