ENID, Okla. - After an extended battle, George David Devers, of Enid, succumbed to cancer at the age of 69. Known as 'Dave' to friends and family, he was born in Wichita, Kan., on Nov. 21, 1944, to George 'Jack' and Alice May (Bradshaw) Devers.
Ray Rose will officiate the service at 2 p.m. Friday, March 7, 2014, at Henninger-Hinson Funeral Home Chapel.
Dave moved to Enid with his parents when he was 2 years old. He attended Enid schools and graduated from Enid High School in 1962. During his high school years, he worked for Otis Phillips Printing Co., and upon graduation, he worked in his father's motorcycle shop (the first Honda dealership in Oklahoma). While working at Devers Motors, he also competed in motocross events throughout the Southwest as one of only a handful of teams in the nation sponsored by Honda.
After enlisting in the Marine Corps, Dave served four years in South Vietnam, obtaining the rank of sergeant and being honorably discharged and awarded several medals for his service.
His career following the Marine Corps was multi-faceted and included owning a Sonic franchise in Orange, Texas, owning and operating a motorcycle dealership in Enid and rising to become lead flight line electrician at Vance Air Force Base and a nation-wide troubleshooter for Northrop Grumman.
In addition to his career pursuits, Dave was active in the Mason and the Shriners, and one of his great pleasures late in life was serving as the engineer for the Shriners train in parades and events.
David was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Theresa Ann Harbor; and his brother-in-law, Travis Holland.
He is survived by his sister, Karen Sue Holland, Enid; sons, Michael Devers, New Brunsfels, Texas, and Patrick Devers, Corpus Christie, Texas; daughters, Lori Wilkinson, Enid, and Kelly Lopez, Oklahoma City; nephews, Todd Holland, Havlock, N.C., and Trent Holland of Enid. In addition, Dave is survived by 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The family respectfully asks that in lieu of flowers, those wishing to express their sympathy consider a contribution to the Shriners Children Hospital or the Wounded Warrior Project in his honor.
