Robert Paul Delaplain, of Pauls Valley, passed from this life on February 6, 2021.
Robert 'Paul' was born in Seminole, Oklahoma on May 16, 1934 to James Lyle Delaplain and Zuleme Levern Gragson Delaplain. Robert grew up in Harden City where he attended McLish School and played for McLish Oilers earning an athletic scholarship at ECU where he was later inducted into the ECU Athletic Hall of Fame. He also earned a B.S. in education and played basketball for Mickey McBride. After he got married and had a child he moved to Nashville, TN. to attend Peabody University, earning a Master’s Degree in Arts. He then took a job at Emory and Henry Junior College in Virginia teaching Government and Coaching Basketball.
He returned home to Oklahoma in 1964 to take a job Coaching Basketball in Pauls Valley and attended OU earning a Master’s in Public Administration. He then left Pauls Valley schools in 1977 to accept a job with Mental Health Services of Oklahoma until his retirement at the age of 75.
Robert received many honors and served in many civic positions including being inducted into ECU Athletic Hall of Fame; the President of the National Mental Health Association for two terms; President of Kiwanis of Pauls Valley and joined the Oklahoma National Guard in 1954.
He is proceeded in death by his parents James and Zuleme Delaplain; wife, Deanna; sisters, Eunice Graham, Linda Stephens, and Carol Bennett; brothers, James (Sonny) and Don.
He is survived by his children, Terry, Bob and wife Tammy, Linda, and Bill and wife Stacy; sister, Dorothy and husband Bob Escamilla; grandchildren, Stephen and wife Maria, Thomas Day, Billy and wife Amber McCann, Robbie and wife Suzie, Dusty and wife Holley, Kody and wife Megan, Jonathan and wife Emily Bowie, Aaron, and Natalie, as well as many great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Memorial Funeral Services will be held Saturday, February 20, 2021 at 10:00 am at Pauls Valley United Methodist Church officiated by Laura Delaplain. Services for cremation are under the direction of Stufflebean-Coffey Funeral Home.
