George Dean, a native of Clarke County Alabama and long time resident of Lawton, Oklahoma departed this life on Monday, October 21, 2013 at a local medical facility. He was born January 23, 1932 and was preceded in death by both his parents, Ledger Dean and Georgia Anner Williams Dean of Gosport, Alabama. The second of eleven children, he is also preceded in death by his sister Mary Lou.
George's early spiritual and educational development was rooted in the Clarke County, Alabama community. Being raised in a God fearing household, he professed his faith in God, accepted Christ, and was baptized at an early age. He attended school in the local area and eventually transitioned to the Mobile County Training School. Later in life, George completed requirements for high school graduation and was awarded his high school diploma at the age of 65. In 1950, following his uncles, he moved to Lawton, Oklahoma where he was employed by the Lawtonian Hotel, Home Savings and Loan Bank, City National Bank, and Lawton Public Schools. He retired from the banking industry many years ago and worked as a bus driver in the Lawton Public School system until health issues no longer permitted him to do so.
He was a member of Galilee Missionary Baptist Church and was ordained a Deacon by the late Rev. Louis K. Jones. He served as Chairman of the Deacon Board, member of The Brotherhood, taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, and transported church members to and from church services. His dedication to these various ministries was a blessing to many for a number of years. He was also a loving father, affectionate "Pop-Pop" to his grandchildren, and a Christian example to the community. As a member of Rising Star Masonic Lodge #18, F.&A.M., he served as Lodge Chaplain. Being called "Noble" was a pleasant sound to his ears after he became a Shriner and 32nd Degree Mason.
Bowling and fishing were his passions. An avid bowler, he served as league president and on more than one occasion, he earned badges for a "700 series" in the Senior bowling category. Catching crappie and largemouth bass were enjoyable to him but frying them up and eating them truly brought a smile to his face. He freely shared these interests with his children and continued these activities until his health began to limit his participation.
With his earthly departure and eternal home going, George leaves to cherish his memory two devoted daughters, Julia Massey and husband Alonzo of Naples, Italy, and Kathy Barnes of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; three dedicated sons, Michael Dean and wife Cheryl of Kennesaw, Georgia, George "Kirby" Dean and wife Janice of Waldorf, Maryland, and Jesse "Skipper" Wingfield and wife Pamela of Cleveland, Ohio: eight granddaughters Trisha and husband Darrell, Daria, Taliah and husband Uswin, Tiffany, Alicia, Chevonne and husband David, Courtney, and Riva; five grandsons, Shaun, Jermaine, Michael Jr., Marlon, and Julian; four great granddaughters, Puree, Kaila, Avery, and Brooklyn; six great grandsons, Andre, Uswin, Levi, Zachariah, Javon, and Tyrone; five sisters, Candice, Betty Jo, Lucy Mae, Margaret, and Willie Mae; four brothers, Jimmy, William, Horace, and Woodrow; Aunt Mary Lee Johnson and Uncle Cleophus Williams. Also cherishing his memory are devoted friends Bill "Son" Straub, Calvin "Sam" Samuels, and Eddie Dabney. A true helper to the end, Mrs. Hattie Dean as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, co-workers, and friends.
