Luetta "Sue" Davis passed away peacefully with family at her side on 24 March, 2019 at the Grace Living Center in Norman, Oklahoma. Sue was 84 years old.
The eldest of five children, Sue was born September 16, 1934 to Calvin and Geneva “Welton” Blankenship in Hodgens, Oklahoma. When Sue was young the family moved to Stringtown, Oklahoma where she lived with her parents and her dad’s parents until her marriage. Sue began working with her family in the cotton fields, and raising and selling watermelons at an early age. These physically demanding experiences honed Sue's tenacious work ethic and her diligence to complete tasks; characteristics she carried with her the rest of her life. At the age of eleven Sue helped financially support her family by washing dishes after school at a local café. By the age of fourteen she was working as a waitress, a career she continued for many years.
As a seventeen year old waitress working a summer job in Fredrick, Oklahoma, Sue met and fell in love with a charming patron who was on wheat harvest at the time. After a brief courtship Sue and Harold Leon Davis were married on June 11, 1952 in Wichita Falls, Texas. Their union was the beginning of a marriage that lasted fifty-one years until Harold's death in 2003. To this union, two children were born; a son Dale and a daughter Brenda.
As Sue and Harold enjoyed adventure and travel, their early years of marriage found them residing in Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas before moving to Laguna Beach, California in 1959. Missing Oklahoma, Sue and Harold returned to and settled in Fort Supply, Oklahoma in 1969. In Fort Supply, Sue went to work for the State of Oklahoma at Western State Hospital as a nursing aid, the beginning of a medical career that would continue over the next 27 years. Continuing with State employment, she transferred to Norman, Oklahoma in 1974, where she worked at the Norman Veterans' Center then to Griffith Memorial Hospital.
Always the caregiver, Sue moved her mother into their home for the last 18 years of her mother’s life. As a fighter and a survivor of cancer and a heart attack, Sue remained active even into retirement. In addition to her daily workouts at the YMCA, Sue worked part time at the Norman North High School cafeteria and she volunteered with the Cleveland County YMCA and the Norman Regional Hospital.
Sue is preceded in death, by her parents, brother’s Archie and Carl, a sister Margret, a grandson Donald, and her husband Harold.
Sue is survived by her brother William F. Blankenship and wife Sue of Hugo, Oklahoma, son Dale Davis and wife Adrion of Norman, daughter Brenda Keene and husband Steve of Norman, and grandson’s Thomas, Jeff, Jason, Devin, and Bradley, seven great-grandchildren and a host of wonderful friends.
A memorial service will be held at Havenbrook Funeral Home on 04/06/2019 at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers the family requests a donation be made to the Cleveland County YMCA.
