After 87 years of a life well lived, John (Johnny) Daniel Davis of Meeker, Oklahoma passed away April 4, 2023, at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Shawnee, Oklahoma from a sudden illness.
He was born January 15, 1936, in Lincoln County, Oklahoma, to Grady Lee Davis and Amy Jannie (Smith) Davis. Johnny began first grade at Concord School, and he was a 1954 graduate of Meeker High School. He married his high school sweetheart Billie Deanna Cloud on July 10, 1954, at the First Christian Church in Meeker, Oklahoma. From this union three children were born: Kathy, Ann, and John.
Johnny was employed by the United States Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Division from July 13, 1959, until his retirement on January 6, 1995, with 36 years of government service. If you had a pond built during these years, probability he surveyed it and staked the pond. For many years, Johnny would take a vacation day to transport livestock to the state fair for the FFA students. Johnny loved his cows and his tractors. He lived a very full and active life up to the time the good Lord called him home. At the time of his passing, he was living independently at home, maintaining his daily routine, and driving. He enjoyed working the daily crossword puzzle in the newspapers and his first stop each morning was the Rainbow Convenience Store to pick up the Oklahoman and Shawnee News Star plus a small package of white powdered sugar donuts. While at the Rainbow he would visit with his good friend Charlie Green and other Lincoln County acquaintances who gather there each day to solve the world’s problems. On weekdays he would accompany his cousins, Dick, Susie and Pat Irwin to the Sparks Nutrition Center for lunch, if they liked what was on the menu. When not dining at Sparks and on the weekends, he would eat at Ladonna’s restaurant where he had permanently reserved a table for himself and friend Brub Wyatt and always welcomed anyone else who cared to join them. Several times a week, he would make an afternoon trip to the Chandler VFW Post to visit with his long-time friends Joe Miller and Brenton Cox.
Johnny was preceded in death by his parents Grady and Jannie Davis; stepfather, Glen Irwin; brothers, Odra and Kenneth Davis; nephews, Larry, Glen and Mike Davis.
Johnny is survived by daughters, Kathy Becher (Dave), Norman; Ann Baskin (Mike), Oklahoma City; son John Davis, Oklahoma City; adopted son David Davis, Edmond; grandsons, Aaron Ketter, Chris Becher, Jackson Davis; granddaughters, Melissa Kaplan, Rebekah Higganbotham, Jenni Sumski, Sarah Baskin, Monica Schornick, Leigha Horner, Alaina Davis and 12 great-grandchildren; special nieces, Anita King and Kelly Lockwood.
Serving as pallbearers are Aaron Ketter, Chris Becher, Shawn Lockwood, Kelvin King, Pat Irwin, and Charlie Green.
The visitation will be Monday, April 10th at 10:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Meeker, Oklahoma, to be followed by a celebration of Johnny’s life at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be private.
Arrangements are under the direction of Lehman Funeral Home of Wellston.
