Dean Cummings

May 1, 1934 ~ Sept. 25, 2007

A memorial service for Dean Ansel Cummings, 73, of San Andreas, Calif., will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, at the San Andreas Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2600, 156 West St. Charles Street, San Andreas, Calif. Burial will be in Sunset View Cemetery, Jackson, Calif. Arrangements are by Daneri Mortuary, Jackson.

He was born May 1, 1934, in Enid to Ansel and Peggy Cummings and died Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2007, at his home.

He moved with his family to the San Francisco Bay area, living first in Oakland, Calif., then in the Menlo Park and San Carlos areas. He attended Sequoia High School in Redwood City, where he played in marching and jazz bands, performing Artie Shaw�s �Concerto for the Clarinet.� In 1953 while a music student at the College of San Mateo, he performed the same concerto at an inaugural concert to open CSM's new performance hall. He earned his bachelor of arts degree in music at San Jose State University where he played the clarinet and saxophone in dance bands.

In 1957, he enlisted in the Army for three years, serving in Germany. He first served as a tank commander and was transferred to the Army jazz/swing band stationed in Goeppingen, where he served as a good will ambassador performing on military bases and civic settings such as Oktoberfest and parades.

Following his discharge, he returned to California where he taught music for Cloverdale Elementary School District and junior high in Cupertino, Calif., while completing a master�s of arts in both social sciences (history) and music at SJSU. In 1964, he accepted a full-time position teaching history, civics and U.S. government at Saratoga High School, which he held for 32 years, retiring in 1996. During the 1970s, �80s and early �90s, he taught private music students in Saratoga and night classes in music and history at San Jose City College and Cabrillo College in Aptos, Calif.

Following his retirement, he and his wife, Dianne, moved to their 15-acre horse ranch in Valley Springs, Calif.

Surviving are his wife, Dianne, of the home in San Andreas; one daughter, Brenda G. Holmes of Boulder Creek, Calif; two sons, Christopher D. Cummings of Hollister, Calif., and Keith E. Cummings of Santa Cruz, Calif.; and five grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the National Association for Music Education (MENC) at 1806 Robert Fulton Drive, Reston, VA 20191.
