Thank You For Your Service!

Robert Joseph Crow, Sr.

February 27, 1930 ~ November 25, 2011

Robert Joseph Crow, Sr., was born in Kansas on February 27, 1930 to Joe and Mae Crow. As a child his family moved to Alva, Oklahoma, where he attended elementary and high school.

As an Alva High School Goldbug he lettered in four sports, football, basketball, baseball and track. He graduated with the class of 1948. While still in high school he enlisted in the Oklahoma National Guard.

Soon after graduation his unit was activated into the army. He retired as a Sargent Major after thirty years of service.

While stationed in Japan he met and married a WAC from Gadsden, Alabama, Joanne Camp. Some of his other overseas duty stations were China, Korea, Germany and three tours to Viet Nam. In the United States he was stationed in Oklahoma, California, Alabama and spent several tours teaching at Fort Monmouth, New Hersey.

When he retired he settled his family in Gadsden, Alabama where he began college. He completed degrees in computer, electronics and business at Gadsden University of Alabama.

His wife preceded him in death.

He is survived by his brother, Charles Crow of Gadsden, Alabama, who was also a graduate of Alva High School. Other survivors include a son, Robert Joseph Crow, Jr., a neurosurgeon in Charleston, West Virginia, his wife Gwyneth and their four children, daughter Vickie Crow Jackson and her two children and a great grandson from Atlanta, Georgia. Vickie is retired from Civil Service as a computer programmer.

Robert enjoyed traveling back to his hometown of Alva. He attended several of his class of 1948 reunions but the one he enjoyed the most of all was the week-long all school reunion in 2000 where he saw many of his old friends. He also came back for a couple of "Army" reunions.

In his later years he loved going to Gold's Gym. His personal trainer, Christina (C.J.), became almost like a granddaughter to him. He and the other "old guys" visited almost as much as they exercised! He kept giving until two weeks prior to his death.

He was diagnosed with liver cancer in September. He went to a liver oncologist at the University of Alabama in Birmingham, Alabama (UB). After several preliminary visits he had radiation beads implanted in his liver on November 17, 2011. He was driving on November 18th and then became critically ill that evening and passed away on November 25, 2011 at his home.

It was his wish to donate his body to the Anatomical Department at UAB.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
