George "Richard" Cross, 78, of Marietta passed away on Thursday, June 2, 2022, at his home surrounded by family. His journey in life began in Callao, Missouri, on November 25, 1943, one of seven children born to Ruby Huffman and George Cross.
Richard grew up and attended school in Missouri. He joined the United States Navy and served in Cuba in 1965 to 1966 and was honorably discharged. While in the Navy, Richard completed his GED and later attended Cooke County College studying commercial art.
Richard worked for Marietta Public Schools as a janitor and on the side, he did carpentry work. He was hardworking and very meticulous. Richard married his bride Mona Case on May 25, 2004. He enjoyed being outdoors fishing, hunting, caring for his dogs, playing horseshoes, and sitting outside visiting with family and friends. Richard was a huge John Wayne fan. Although he had many interests, Richard loved nothing more than doing for others and spending time with his family. He was Daddy to many and Papa to many more.
In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by granddaughter, Stormi Ramon; brother, Lewis Cross; sister, Wanda Cross; nieces, Brenda, Geralayn, and Loretta; first wife, Linda; and grandparents.
Those left to carry on his memory are his wife, Mona Cross of the home; sons, Weldon Cross of Marietta and Greg Cross and wife Virginia of Alabama; stepdaughters, Tracy Jones of Ardmore and Katrina Armstrong and husband Joe of Wisconsin; brothers, Jerry Cross of Redding, Ohio, Jim Cross of Collinsville, and Marvin Cross of Aguilar, Colorado; sisters, Betty Pappen of Kansas and Marie Ross and husband Bill of Marietta; grandchildren, Colt Kretzschmar, Makenzie Cross, Jaclynn Cross, William Miller, Shanda Wilkinson and husband Cody, Lilly Armstrong, Logan Brown, and Lexis Lawson; and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Services to celebrate Richard's life were held at 10 a.m. Monday, June 6 at the Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home Chapel, Marietta with Lawrence Anderson officiating.
Casket bearers were Glenn Harrell, John Jones, Bill Ross, John Yeatts, Brent Coleman, Terry Martin, and Buddy Hughes. Honorary bearers were David Magee, Colt Kretzschmar, Cody Wilkinson, Eugene Rambo, "Bro Pro", Chance Cavitt, Brett Rambo, Richie Coleman, Greg Cross, Virginia Cross, Weldon Cross, Jennifer Spradling, Charles Clark, William Miller, and Debra Cross.
