ENID, OK - Born in Sand Creek, Okla., on March 27, 1918, to John Elmer Sylvanus Ricks and Maude Alice Montgomery Ricks, Lorine Dahlem Cromwell passed from this life on Thursday, July 18, 2013, in Oklahoma City.
As a child, her family moved to a farm south of Wakita, Grant County, Okla., where she spent the next 53 years.
Giving incalculable time, resources and support, she was a devoted daughter, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and mother-in-law.
Wakita has lost one of its greatest historians as Lorine’s encyclopedic memory could relate family trees and events, town events and local lore to her dying day.
Lorine began piano lessons early to become an accomplished musician. She played the organ and piano at the Wakita United Methodist Church for over 30 years. The list of her piano students is lengthy and they remember her for her patience, talent and skill.
In Enid, her home was a meeting place of local musicians, who came regularly to spend the night in music and singing. She delighted in hosting parties for friends and family and her elegant table settings were renowned among all who were lucky to participate.
Her talent as a seamtress was especially appreciated by her children and grandchildren. Elegant and fun garments were greatly anticipated from her.
She married Paul F. Dahlem in 1936, and to this union two children were born, Paula Jeanne and John Karl.
For 34 years, she was the epitome of a farmer’s wife, resilient, hard-working, creative, gracious, generous, wise and caring, noted for her cooking — especially fried chicken.
After Paul passed away in 1970, she earned her LPN’s license and began traveling the globe with her friend, Cecelia Simons.
This peripatetic life style continued when she married Roy Cromwell and moved to St. Louis.
From St. Louis to Ponca City, to Florida in the winter for 20 years, to Enid and then to Oklahoma City, these two spent over 35 years together.
In all of these places, her chief hobby was buying, renovating and “flipping” houses.
Lorine was a faithful member of United Methodist Church and proud member of PEO and Beta Sigma Phi.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Paul and Roy; daughter, Paula Jeanne Camara; and three grandchildren, Joseph Fredrick Camara, Jeffrey Ricks Camara and James Dahlem Camara.
She is survived by son, John and wife Kyle of Oklahoma City; granddaughter, Stephanie Dahlem Pounds and husband Jeff of Houston; grandson, Stephen Paul Dahlem of Dallas; great-grandson, Alex Michael Pounds and wife Ashley of Houston, and Brian Kyle Pounds of Austin, Texas.
Special thanks to Sommerset Assisted Living, where Lorine lived comfortably for the last nine years of her life and to LifeCare Hospice for the care in the last few days.
Memorials may be made to the Wakita United Methodist Church or to the Wakita Nursing Home.
Service will take place at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 26, 2013, at Wakita United Methodist Church. Arrangements by Advantage Funeral Service, South Chapel, Oklahoma City, OK.
