She grew up in Tulsa and was a 1952 graduate of Will Rogers High School. Cheryl later attended Oklahoma State University for two years. On Jan. 29, 1965, she married Johnny Criner Jr. (John) in the Sharp Chapel at the University of Tulsa campus. The couple traveled to multiple cities due to John's work before ultimately making Enid, Okla., their home in the mid-70s. Cheryl was a member of North Garland Church of Christ in Enid.

Her professional career started as a real estate agent for ERA and Century 21, and she ultimately transitioned to a position at Liberty Federal Savings Bank until she retired.
