John Robert (Bob) Covington, of Luther, Oklahoma, died August 24, 2016.
John was born January 31, 1941, in Washington, Oklahoma, the 4th child of Clyde and Ethel Covington. John was born with Cerebral Palsy and spent some time in Norman in a school for children with Cerebral Palsy.
The family moved to Guthrie, Oklahoma in 1950, where John attended school and graduated from Guthrie High School in 1960.
John enjoyed working with his brother-in-law, Richard Dreessen on the farm, where he drove a tractor or pickup to help with the chores.
After graduation, John worked in Oklahoma City for a short time, then returned to Guthrie where he worked at several service stations. His dad opened a station at the corner of Highway 51 and I-35 in about 1968 and John ran the station while his Dad did carpenter work in Guthrie. John is probably best remembered for his years spent working at Homeland grocery in Guthrie. John liked to joke with his customers, and usually the joke was not completely understood by most. Unable to drive a car due to his disability, John walked the mile or so to and from work.
Even though John had a disability, he worked full time until his retirement at age 70 or 71. After retirement, John enjoyed traveling the United States, visiting many National Parks and other areas including Alaska.
John attended Noble Avenue Baptist Church.
John was preceded in death by his wife Ramona, brother Harold, sister Viola, and his parents.
He is survived by sisters, Betty Dreessen (Richard), Martha Dunn (Robert), brothers, William (Sharon), and Darrell. John is also survived by lots of nieces, nephews, and friends.
Memorial services will be held at Noble Avenue Baptist Church in Guthrie, Oklahoma, at 2:00 P.M., Friday, August 26th, 2016. Services are under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home.
There will be no visitation.
