Funeral service for Lawrence S. Conrad will be Friday, January 31, 2020, at 10 a.m. at the Kiowa United Methodist Church in Kiowa, Kansas. Burial will be at the Riverview Cemetery with arrangements by Lanman Funeral Home, Inc. of Kiowa. Viewing will be at the church prior to the service on Friday morning. Lawrence Stephen Conrad was born March 6, 1931, in Kiowa, Kansas. He lived all his life in Kiowa and worked as a parts manager for a Case dealership for many years. He was well known by many farmers from numerous counties. Those who came in for parts knew they could trust him and rely on him no matter the time of day, especially during harvest time. He served during the Korean War in the U.S. Army as a Combat Engineer from July 24,1951 to July 21, 1953. At the time of his discharge, his rank was that of technical sergeant. He received the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars and the United Nations Service Medal.
After returning home from the service, Lawrence married his soulmate Joyce K. Smith. Together they had four children. They lived in Kiowa, and raised their children on a farm north of town and eventually moved to town in 1973. Lawrence was a member of the Kiowa United Methodist Church and the VFW. For many years he was a part of the Honor Guard and Firing Squad and served at the services of friends and servicemen.
Lawrence kept as active as he could and never once complained about his circumstances. He was always happy and loved to play cards with his children and grandchildren. You could find him most days watching a good western or sports. He was a huge fan of the KU Jayhawks, KC Royals and the KC Chiefs. One of the last adventures Lawrence had was what he called, "a trip of a lifetime." He was able to travel on the Kansas Honor Flight in 2015 with 56 veterans.
Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents, Marvin and Elsie Conrad; his wife, Joyce Smith Conrad; son, Michael Conrad and siblings, Dorothy Green, Melvin Conrad, Etta Mae Coburn.
Those he leaves behind are daughters Annette Louise (Kory) Waisner (of Leawood, Kansas) and Brenda Lea (Rick) Dirks (of Medicine Lodge, Kansas); son Randy Lynn (Julie) Conrad (of Wichita, Kansas); six grandchildren, Kyle Waisner, Ryan Waisner, Dylan Conrad, Logan Conrad, Adam (Sara) Dirks and Jodi (Johnnie) Davis; four great-grandchildren, Daylynn West, Joe Dirks, Lexi Dirks and Waylon Davis; one great-great grandchild, Reagan West; sisters-in-law Jane Helmley, Judy Ross and Dodi Smith-Doeling; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to the Kiowa United Methodist Church, Kansas Honor Flight or Heartland Hospice in care of Lanman Funeral Home.
