Bert Clarence Compton Jr., a beloved Tulsa resident known for his quiet demeanor and love of community, passed away on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, at The Parke Assisted Living. He was 92 years old. Born on August 10, 1932, in Trousdale, Okla., Bert was the son of Bert Sr. and Thelma Olive (Tierney) Compton. He grew up in Shawnee where he was an active high school athlete, particularly excelling in football.
His professional life began in the grocery business, and he fondly recalled delivering milk "to the mansions" in Shawnee during his school years, but for most of his professional career he was a machinist at Rockwell International, a division of Boeing Aerospace.
Bert's personal life was marked by two significant marriages. He first married Wauldine on July 1, 1950, and they had one daughter, Paula. Later, he met his second wife, Jessie, through her relatives in Shawnee and they married on Halloween in 1970. Together, they lived in various locations including Tulsa, Broken Arrow, Terlton, and spent time at Lake Keystone with family.
Bert was a Past Master of Mannford Lodge #515, Mannford, Okla., a 32nd degree Mason in the Tulsa Scottish Rite and a member of Tulsa Akdar Shrine. He was particularly active in the Scooters Club of the Akdar Shrine, participating in numerous parades. In the 1990s, Bert and Jessie retired to Palm Harbor, Fla., where he indulged in his passion for golf. A lifelong community member, he was a dedicated member of the Elks Lodge. Known for his easy-going nature, Bert was universally loved. He was an animal lover, always keeping a cat in the house and adoring dogs. In his later years at The Parke Assisted Living, he was often seen driving his scooter as a security volunteer, accompanied by his dear friend Lynn Sammons.
Surviving family include his daughter Paula Maxey and husband Richard; grandchildren, Jackie and husband Carson Bontrager, and Richard Ryan and wife Meghan Maxey; great-grandchildren, Olivia and Jude Bontrager and Richard Aaron and Samuel Anthony Maxey.
Bert was preceded in death by his parents; his wives, Wauldine and Jessie.
A memorial service with Masonic rites will be held 11 a.m. Friday December 6, 2024, in Rivercrest Chapel of Bixby-South Tulsa Funeral Service. Bert will be remembered for his quiet strength, community spirit, and kind heart.
Arrangements by Bixby South Tulsa Funeral Service, Bixby, Okla.
