John Auguster Cole was born to John and Fannie Frances Brooks Cole on August 31, 1943 and what a glorious day that was. He was their only son, he arrived on his mother Mama Fannie’s birthday and when the couple were in their 40s and 50s. John attended St. James A.M.E. Church in Hennessey and accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior when he was a young boy. He graduated from Lacy High School in 1962 where he was active in sports and was his class president. He married Gloria Stevenson July 9, 1966 (the first year of the Super Bowl!) To this union, one daughter, TraceyLynn Taylor Cole (Longacre) was born. They also had two babies, Jason Ashley and Baby Girl Cole who died as infants. John attended OSU Tech and completed training with Dale Carnegie. John was a successful farmer, entrepreneur, and was involved in the oil business. When he wasn’t hard at work, he enjoyed spending time with his daughter, and friends the Halides and Perigees at places like Little Sahara Dune Buggy Park. John was a volunteer with the Jaycees, the Black Farmers and was President of the Hennessey PTA. He was also a Super Bowl Brother in Enid.
He moved to Dallas, Texas in the early 1980s. He joined Mt. Olive Baptist Church and was a volunteer on the audiovisual committee but he also offered advice in other areas like the church marquee fountains. John was top salesman at Throop’s The Big Tall Place (which was quite fitting for John who stood six foot four inches). He was manager at Met gram America (a role that solidified his love for technology, TVs and gadgets). He also founded and owned several businesses like John’s Roasted Corn (he was an approved vendor for the State Fair of Texas); Extravaganza Video Productions (he did conferences for Mercedes Benz); and Lawns by John where he was awarded both residential and commercial accounts. But John’s creativity didn’t stop there. He also designed furniture (his work was sold at Canton), gazebos, water features, and art. On May 21, 1998 John married Lena Wallace and welcomed her children Chris and Crystal to the family. John and Lena loved to travel and host parties at their home. Even when John was diagnosed with stage four prostate cancer, he and Lena continued their travels. John was a man of continuous activity and improvement. Just look at any before and after photos of a landscape, fence, backyard, entertainment system or kitchen and you’ll see his incredible creativity.
John will be missed terribly by his wife Lena, his daughter Taylor and husband Dr. Mike Longacre, his step-children and grandchildren Chris and Jennifer Dillard along with their children, Javriel, Layana and Camille; Krystle Wilson, nieces Sharon and Karen, cousin Garland Cole, his family in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, California, his relatives, neighbors, countless friends and admirers.
One of John’s favorite songs was “Your Own Kind of Way” by Maze featuring Frankie Beverly. Listen to it often and remember John.
