Gerald J. Cokely, 74, died November 13, 2010, in Fort. Smith, Arkansas. Born in Oklahoma City, OK, on September 5, 1936, he was preceded in death by his parents, Homer J. Cokely and Lucille C. [Williams] Cokely, and his brother, D. Donald Cokely. He graduated from Chickasha (Oklahoma) High School in 1954. He attended Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, NM. Drafted in 1955, he served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. He received a Bachelor's of Business Administration degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1969.
Gerald was a member of the Church of the Immaculate Conception, and had served as a Lay Minister. He was a 3rd & 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a volunteer at Miss Laura's Visitor Center for over 15 years, where he was a recipient of the McConnell award for outstanding service. He also served on the board of the Fort Smith Frontier Fest.
He is survived by wife Joyce [Frey] Cokely of Fort Smith, AR, Children; David and wife Sharon of Kansas City, MO, Joseph and wife Susan of Flowood, MS, Sarah and husband Jose Gabrielle of Kansas City, MO, Brother; Darrell E. Cokely and wife Melinda, Sisters-In-Law; Melissa Cokely, Joan Neal, Janet Mutz, Paula Everett, Brother-in-Law; James Frey, Mother-in-Law; Pauline Frey. Grandchildren; Jonathan and Evan Cokely of Kansas City, MO, and Jacob Cokely of Flowood, MS, and 14 nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Tuesday, November 16, from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. with the Vigil for the Deceased occurring from 6:00 - 6:30 p.m., at Edwards Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be Wednesday, November 17, at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of the Immaculate Conception under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ed Newlin, Gary Ford, Lewis Dunn, Claude Legris, Dennis Paskey, and Curt Moon.
Honorary pallbearers will be Horace and Adrienne Marvin, Gail Newlin, Sharon Siebenmorgan, Cathy Ford, Carol Moon, Rose Dunn, The Whirlpool Breakfast Bunch, and The Miss Laura's Starrs.
