Betty Jean (Wanasek) Cohenour

August 18, 1923 ~ April 8, 2020

Betty Jean Cohenour died April 8, 2020 in Ponca City at the age of 96. She was born August 18,1923 to Larry and Bea Wanasek. She grew up in Muskogee, the eldest of four children. She married Tommy Cohenour on December 25, 1942. They moved to Ponca City a few years later where he was an optometrist.

“BJ” was an avid golfer, active in her church, and a leader in Ponca City’s Meals on Wheels ministry. She loved to cook and was an excellent chef. She was also a talented artist and seamstress who could create anything from a pastel or watercolor to a prom dress or a smocked child’s outfit. BJ’s primary focus was always family, taking care of them, helping with projects, even acting as an amateur film director. She loved her family and she loved the Lord.

She is survived by her children: Judy Mee (husband Patrick), Gary (wife Deanna), Pat (wife Cyndi); grandchildren: Jennifer Long (husband Steven), Aaron Cohenour (wife Jessica), Megan Harper (husband Richard); great-grandchildren: Mason and Caleb Long, Lawson and Laina Cohenour, Miles and Dean Harper; sister, Connie Bowen; and sister-in-law, Anna Marie Wanasek.

A private family service as well as a celebration of her life will be held at a later date.

Memorials may be made to: First United Methodist Church of Ponca City, Hospice of North Central Oklahoma, or the Ponca City Humane Society.

Arrangements are under the direction of Trout Funeral Home & Crematory.
