Charles Donald Coe, Sr., 87, of Cedar Vale, KS, passed away on Friday, July 27, 2018 at William Newton Hospital of Winfield.
Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 A.M. on August 3, 2018 at the Cedar Vale High School Gym. Military Funeral Honors will follow at the Cedar Vale Cemetery. No visitation is planned. A memorial has been established in Charlie's name for The People's Place or the Caney River Cowboy Church at Cedar Vale. Contributions may be made through Shelley Family Funeral Home, P.O. Charles Donald was born on March 11, 1931 in Cedar Vale, KS, the son of Charlie Helton and Loretta (Foster) Coe. He graduated from Sedan High School in 1949. He went to work in the oilfield in Oklahoma and Texas for 1 year. In 1951, he joined the United States Air Force and did his basics in San Antonio, TX. He was united in marriage to Mary Ann Mills in 1951, to this union, two children Charles Donald Coe, Jr. and Beverly were born. After basic training he was stationed in Tucson, Arizona for 4 years. While in Tucson, his duties were a motorcycle escort for the parades and reached the rank of Tech Sergeant. This is where he went overseas every 90 days. In 1954, he was transferred to McConnell Air Force Base. He was honorably discharged in 1959 after 8 years in the military with many honors. After his military career, he started Charles D. Coe Trucking Service until his retirement due to illness in 2016. He couldn't have made a career without the help of his drivers, Bill Rutter, Pete Rahn, Donnie Stone, Jerry Walker and his father, Charles H. Coe.
He was baptized in the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Sedan, KS and enjoyed attending the Caney River Cowboy Church in Cedar Vale, KS until his death.
His family includes, his son Charles Donald "Don" Coe, Jr., of Cedar Vale; his daughter, Beverly Coe Simmons, of Winfield; his brother, Darrell Coe of Bartlesville, OK; his 4 grandchildren, Erik Preston Ankrom (Mallory) of Olathe, KS, Emily Dawn Hargraves (William) of Burbank, OK, Brett Alan Coe (Lindsey) of Bartlesville, Jake Allen Simmons of Overland Park, KS and his 6 great-grandchildren, Presley Perrier, Gracie Hargraves, Ben Hargraves, Addison Coe, Emmeline Ankrom and William Ankrom.
He was preceded in death by his parents, half-sister, Francis Louise Crouch and sister-in-law, Darlene Coe.
