James Taylor Chuculate, son of Moses Buffington and Mary Cordelia Taylor Chuculate, was born, October 29, 1924 in Muskogee, Oklahoma. He departed this life, April 9, 2017 at the age of 92 years and 5 months.
On June 5, 1943 in Leavenworth County, Kansas, he was united in marriage to Louise Adair. Together they shared 62 years of marriage.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise; his parents; a brother, Odell; a sister, Ora Lee Chuculate Woods; a step-brother, Grady Chuculate; two sons, James Taylor Chuculate, II, and Charles Adair Chuculate; one grandson, James Chuculate, III, and two sons-in-law, Michael Lafferty and Larry Porter.
Survivors include: four daughters: Lee Anna Mitchell (Bruce), Camdenton, Missouri; Sandra Porter, Phillipsburg, New Jersey; Barbara Lafferty, Camdenton, Missouri; Margaret Shoup (Vernon), Centennial, Colorado; and six grandchildren: Rachel Porter, Phillipsburg, New Jersey; Scott Mitchell (Jisun), San Diego, California; Chris Mitchell (Beth), Brooklyn, New York; Melissa Arnie (Nigel), Pasadena, Maryland; Eric Shoup (Sara), Waco, Texas; Ryan Shoup (Elisa), Aurora, Colorado; and five great-grandchildren: Sophia Louise Marquez of Phillipsburg, New Jersey; Alice Lee and Walter Lee Mitchell of San Diego, California, Wyatt Abram Shoup of Waco, TX, James Arthur Mitchell of Brooklyn, NY, and many nieces, nephews and friends.
James was a member of the Cherokee tribe, Wolf clan. As a child he attended Seneca Indian School near Wyandotte, OK and graduated from Chilocco Indian School in Chilocco, OK in 1940. James served his country in military service from 1942 - 1946, first in the Signal Corps, then as a pilot in the Army Air Forces. He was a proud alumnus of University Kansas, graduating with a B.S in Business and Accounting in June, 1949.
James worked for Dun and Bradstreet in Kansas City, Missouri and Wichita, Kansas and for the Federal Small Business Administration in Des Moines, IA, Washington, D.C. and Denver, Colorado. He was Chief of the Financial Division of the six state region 8 of SBA when he retired in 1985
In his spare time, he enjoyed playing poker, golfing, and reading books about world and U.S. history. He spent many hours researching genealogy, creating a database for his family and other relatives. He loved spending time with his family.
James was a loving and generous husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and uncle and a caring friend and neighbor. We celebrate his life and his accomplishments and will treasure the memories he created for his family and friends. His positive outlook and gentle spirit were his greatest gifts. He will be dearly missed by family and friends, but never forgotten.
