Bessie L. Chriss died of natural causes on April 3, 2000, at her home near Woodland. Born on Feb. 19, 1914, in Tupelo, Okla., to Lola (Miller) and Homer Perry, she was 86.
She was the oldest of eight children.
She was an accomplished seamstress and began sewing for her siblings at the age of 8.
She was married to S. J. Chriss on Dec. 31, 1932. She and her husband came to California during the Great Depression and made their home in Yolo County for 60 years.
She was employed by Breit's Department store in Woodland for a number of years in the yardage department. Later she worked for the JC Penney Co. at the Main Street store until her retirement in 1979 in the same capacity. Many customers came to the store to ask her advice on sewing problems.
After retirement she continued to work at her farm raising livestock and was active until the age of 80. It was not unusual to see her on top of her barn fixing the roof in her 80s.
She loved gardening and continued this hobby until her death. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the joy of her life. Her 86th birthday was recently celebrated by her family.
She is survived by her daughter, Evelyn Zielesch and her husband Fred; son, Larry Chriss and his wife Jan; six grandchildren, Greg Zielesch, Derek Zielesch, Tanya Johnson, Traci Cline, Mark Chriss and Steve Chriss, all of Woodland; 11 great-grandchildren, Rex, Lindsey, Dane and Danielle Zielesch, Cache Zielesch, Christi and Brandi Cline, Rodney Gladney, Chase, Cody and Casey Smith and Jordynne Brown, all of Woodland; three sisters, Martha Gage, Lil Trumbull of Woodland, Dovie Lewis of Stockton; and a brother, Roy Perry of Ceres.
She was preceded in death by her husband of more than 50 years, S. J. "Buster" Chriss; her parents; and three brothers, Lloyd Perry, Barney Perry and Russel Perry.
Viewing and visitation will be Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at McNary's Chapel in Woodland. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Monument Hill Cemetery.
