Barbara (Nicholson) Choate

Barbara (Nicholson) Choate
August 21, 1940 ~ May 13, 2024

Barbara Nicholson Choate, of Caney, Oklahoma, went home to be with Jesus on May 13, 2024, at the age of 83. Born on August 21, 1940, in Santa Rita, New Mexico, Barbara's life was a testament to her loving nature and the joy she found in nurturing others.

Barbara's early years were spent in New Mexico, where she was born to Malcolm “Big Nick” Nicholson and Wilma Daphene (McCarty) Nicholson. She found the love of her life, Richard Choate, and the two were married in Albuquerque on March 4, 1967. Together, they embarked on the adventures of military life, which saw them travel and touch the lives of many. She absolutely loved being the wife of a Marine Corps Officer and was a proud patriot.

After earning her bachelor's degree, Barbara dedicated herself to the field of education, shaping minds, both young and old, as a teacher. She later opened a small real estate office with Richard, where they worked side by side, selling properties for many years. After retiring, she and Richard, along with the kids and grand kids, moved to Oklahoma to start a new journey once again.

Those who knew Barbara will remember her for her loving nature, her unwavering faith in God and her selfless dedication to her family. She found immense joy in gardening, camping, fishing, painting and crafts, cooking, reading and caring for her dogs. Barbara cherished her grandchildren and great grandchildren, often taking them on adventures, as she loved to travel. This was a reflection of the beauty and care she brought into the world. She was a beacon of strength for the entire family, whose lives she enriched with her wisdom and love.

Barbara is survived by her son Rich Choate, her daughter, Shawna Choate Rowland, grandchildren Alex Rowland, Sydney Rowland, Kasie Choate, Tyler Heckler and Nic Choate, great-grandchildren Willow Rowland and Xander Rowland, her sisters Sharleen Maese and Betty Marriage, her nieces Nicole Kelly Hickle and Ramona Marriage Redwine and her nephews Patrick and Roger Maese.

Barbara was preceded in death by her beloved husband Richard, her parents Malcolm and Wilma Nicholson, her sister Maxine Nicholson and her nephews Christopher “Kit” Spangler and Luke Marriage.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date,

Services are under the direction of Homes-Coffey-Murray Funeral Home, 121 North 5th Street, Durant, Oklahoma 74701
