Doctor Jose Sideco Chioco, 80, of Norman, Oklahoma, joined our Heavenly Father on April 6, 2017 surrounded by family and close friends in Oklahoma City. A celebratory Mass will be held at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church on Saturday, April 29, 2017 at 1:30 p.m. with Reverend Robert T. Wood officiating.
Affectionately known as “Joe” to dear friends, Jose was born in Manila, Philippines to Dr. Florentino Ortiz Chioco and Milagros Sideco on August 1, 1936. The only son of six children graduated high school at Culver Academies, in Culver, Indiana where he pursued his passion for fencing. He continued his higher education at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia and helped establish a collegiate fencing team for VMI. Jose went on to earn a medical degree at the University of the East in the Philippines. He worked at state psychiatric institutions in Virginia and Mississippi before settling his family in Norman, Oklahoma. He built a successful private practice, Chioco Medical Services, for more than three decades before retiring in 2013. He served in various leadership positions for the Philippine Medical Association of Oklahoma and assisted with the organization of several medical mission trips to the Philippines. In 1995, Jose was honored at the National Memorial Service for victims of the Oklahoma City bombing for his tireless volunteer efforts to provide trauma and grief counseling for victims and their families. Jose was a loyal fan and supporter of University of Oklahoma football. He enjoyed family vacations, world travel and devoted much of his time in his later years as a bible study teacher with Couples for Christ in OKC.
Jose is survived by his wife of 57 years, Dr. Carmen Warren Chioco of Norman, Oklahoma, his sister Mathilde Chioco Ampil, his children: John Chioco, John and Carolyn Wilder, Tom and Cynthia Conroy, Joey Chioco, Steve and Cecile Yager and Jamie Chioco, his grandchildren: Sidney and Sarah Wilder, Chase and Dillon Fraser, Noah and Grace Yager, Camryn Conroy and extended family.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Florentino and Milagros Chioco, and his sisters: Asuncion Chioco-Bacani, Esperanza Chioco-Perez, and Divina Corazon Chioco.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Oklahoma Chapter at www.lls.org/oklahoma. The family wishes to extend its gratitude to the Philippine Medical Association and Couples for Christ, where he cultivated so many longtime friendships and received prayer and support, especially during his final days.
Lastly, Jose’s devoted family finds peace and comfort in the promise of John 14:1-4 “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going.”
