Herbert Eugene "Jack" Cheves passed away June 30, 2018 at his home in Pawhuska, Oklahoma.
Jack was born January 2, 1934 in the family farm house in the red hills South of Dill City, OK. Jack was born to Herbert Eugene and Lena Belle "Abrams" Cheves. He attended Dill City schools where he excelled in baseball, basketball, and track. Jack graduated Dill City High School in 1951.
He married Barbara Anne Frazer on February 24, 1952. Jack worked with his father on the farm until 1956 when he took a job with Schofield Shorthorn Ranch in Austin, Texas. After a three year stint in Austin, Jack moved his wife and three sons to the Bridwell Hereford Ranch in Windthorst, Texas. For ten years he exhibited registered Hereford cattle at major shows across the country and became one of the most respected herdsman in the American Hereford Association. In 1968 a daughter joined the family in Archer City, Texas. The next year Jack and his family moved to Pawhuska, Oklahoma where he managed the Oxley Ranch for twenty-eight years and when the ranch sold, Jack semi-retired, but looked after his own interests including his cattle and haying operation.
Jack was an avid supporter of Pawhuska school sports and activities especially 4-H and FFA events. He was also a charter member of Pawhuska Elks Lodge 2542, and the Osage County Cattlemen's Association.
Jack was preceded in death by his wife Barbara, his parents and three sisters Juanita, Geneva, and Wanda Jean.
He is survived by three sons, Rick Cheves of Pawhuska, Ok.; David Cheves and wife, Teresa of Fairfax, Ok.; Jimmy Cheves and wife, Georgeanna of Pawhuska, Ok.; and one daughter, Jaclynn Cheves Balzer of Cordell, Ok. Jack has eight grandchildren: Cody Cheves and wife, Latoya of Stockton, Ca.; Claudia Hampton and husband, Jack of Shidler, Ok.; Grant Cheves and wife Tia of Oolagah, Ok.; J.W. Cheves and wife Tashia of Stillwater, Ok.; Aaron Cheves and wife Heather of Pawhuska, Ok.; Laramie Balzer of Cordell, Ok.; Lindsey Carlisle and husband Kris of Weatherford, Ok.; and Layne Balzer of Cordell, Ok. Jack has 18 great-grandchildren: Robert Hinojosa, Kannon Williams; Wyatt, Lena, Will and Lyza Hampton; Beau Cheves; Luke Morgan, Isaiah and Mallary Smith, Gabe Cheves; Kailsey, Kienan, Kaylor, Kane, Kayden, and Kinlee Cheves and Langston Balzer, and a host of nieces, nephews and wonderful friends.
Memorial services will be held Friday, July 6, 2018 at 1:30 p.m., at the Pawhuska Fairgrounds Ag building. Pastor James Hager and Brett Thomason will officiate. Private family interment will be held prior to the memorial service.
