Shelley L. (Stevenson) Chadwell

Shelley L. (Stevenson) Chadwell
October 1, 1949 ~ September 15, 2024

A memorial service to celebrate and remember the life of Shelley L. Chadwell will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, September 23, 2024, in the chapel at DeLozier Funeral Service. Shelley passed away at her home in Chelsea on Sunday, September 15, 2024, with her daughter at her side. She was 74.

Born in Bartlesville, OK on October 1, 1949, to Owen L. and Anita M. (McDonald) Stevenson, Shelley was raised in several different states throughout her life. After graduating from Staples High School in Staples, Minnesota, she continued her education at Minnesota State Community and Technical College at the Moorhead Campus. In 1968, Shelley married the father of her children, Elmer Kemp, and they had two daughters, Angie and Missy. In later life, Shelley married Ronald Chadwell, a marriage that lasted until his death in 2016.

Shelley's upbringing was somewhat challenging due to her father's job, which kept the family moving from one state to another. She had childhood memories of how sometimes the kids in her school would make fun of her because of her Okie accent. Shelley would often recount that from the time she was born, her sister Toni never stopped crying. She also noted that neither she nor her sisters were ever spanked, as their parents always said, "little girls don't need to be spanked." Needless to say, they were all a bit spoiled. Raised and confirmed in the Lutheran Church, Shelley and her sisters all had perfect attendance pins for never missing Sunday School.

Shelley was a very artistic and talented woman. She enjoyed painting, although she had to be in the right mood to do it. She loved the early morning and flowers, especially bright-colored ones. According to her daughter, she probably should have been an art critic because of her attention to detail. Shelley was incredibly funny, and her wit could bring humor to the daily grind of life. She loved to tell jokes and would always follow up with "That's a Fact Joke," which typically made it even funnier.

Shelley loved music and was known to take dance breaks with family. When her daughters were getting ready for their first school dance, Shelley taught them her 60's dance moves, using the Beatles song "Twist and Shout" as a lesson. She also made dancing memories with her grandchildren many times in her driveway to the song "Brown Eyed Girl." Shelley was particularly fond of the blues.

Shelley was very patriotic and loved the 4th of July. She would fly the American Flag proudly and practiced true flag etiquette, never letting the sun go down on it and ensuring it never got rained on. Each evening, she would fold the flag, and the next day as the sun came up, she would once again put the flag up. It was her way of expressing pride in her country.

In later life, travel became a favorite pastime. Shelley and her husband Ron visited Florida, although Shelley was quick to point out she didn't really care for it due to the excessive sand. They took a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Scotland, went white water rafting in Colorado, and made memories that lasted the rest of their lives. Shelley looked forward to occasional solo trips to Arizona to see her high school friend Carol. She and Ron were members of a motorcycle club, with which they made several day trips to different places in and around Oklahoma.

When grandchildren came along, Shelley became "Mimi." Although she would say she was "much too young to be a grandmother," she enjoyed every minute of it. She had a unique relationship with each of her grandchildren.

Shelley is survived by her children, Angie Woodson and husband John, Missy Layman and husband Wayne; grandchildren, Adrienne Woodson, Joel Baker-Gil and husband Tanner, Breanna Baker-Hackney and husband Mikey, Anthony Smith, Austin Smith, John Mitchell Woodson and wife Alexis; great-grandchildren, Trevor Smith, Addison Smith, Cyrus Smith, Millie Smith, Lucy Jane Woodson, and Adalynn Hanson; sister, Toni Payne and husband Johnie; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Shelley was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ronald, and sister Jonnie Faye.
