Kenneth W. Cates

18 Feb 1937 ~ 26 Apr 1996

Kenneth W. Cates was born on April 16, 1942 at Elk City, Oklahoma to Joe and Pauline Trent Cates.

He passed from this life on Tuesday, January 2, 1996 at his home in Williamsburg, New Mexico. Kenneth had reached the age of 53 years at the time of his death.

Kenneth spent his growing up years at Leedey attending all 12 yeaars of school at Leedey graduate of the Class of 1960.

On April 16, 1959 Kenneth was united in marriage to Patricia Ann Harrel in the sanctuary of the Leedey First Baptist Church. To this union three children were born: Dennis Wayne, Daphne Lynn and Justin Lawrence. In 1960 Kenneth enlisted in the United States Army Reserve Unit at Woodward, Oklahoma. He remained in this branch of service, where he attained the rank of Sergean, until 1968.

To further his education, Kenneth enrolled at Oklahoma State University in 1965 where he received his degree in Animal Science in 1970. While attending school at Stillwater he received his pilot's license and an instructor flying license. He then gave flying lessons through the OSU School of Aviation.

Following graduation in 1970 he moved to Ft. Pierre, South Dakota, where he lived for two years. In 1972 he moved to Kansas City, Missouri where he spent around one year. In 1974 fhe returned to Leedey to make his home until 1984 at which time he moved to Las Cruces, New Mexico. Most of Kenneth's life's work was involved in the field of ranching and cattle production where he was very knowledgable. The last few years he became the owner of Cates Tire and Muffler.

In 1950 Kenneth was baptized and became a member of the Leedey First Baptist Church.

In his leisure time he enjoyed flying, quail hunting, motorcycle riding on his Harley Davidson and attending rodeos. He was also a member of the Truth of Consequences Pilot Association and a volunteer of the War Museum in Santa Teresa, New Mexico.

On May 13, 1994 Kenneth was united in marriage to Debbie Williams at Truth or Consequences, New Mexico.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Jess Cates, and Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Trent.

He is survived by his parents, Joe and Pauline Cates of Leedey, wife, Debbie of Williamsburg, New Mexico, a daughter Daphne Lynn Jaquex and husband, David of Artesia, New Mexico, two sons, Dennis and his wife Robin of Leedey, and Justin and his wife Jodie of Evergreen, Colorado, a brother, Kevin and his wife, Ann of Leedey, four grandchildren, Jacob, Mandy and Joshua Jaquez and Chelsea Cates, several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and other relatives and numerous friends.
