Titus Carter, 45, of Norman, Oklahoma passed away Monday, August 16, 2021 in his home.
He was born February 4, 1976 to Cindy (Bruton) Emerson and Wesley Carter in Palestine, Texas.
Titus was raised in Texas, Ireland, Kansas, Georgia, Ecuador, Scotland, South Carolina, and Oklahoma. He has lived in Norman since 1989.
Titus attended Norman High School and earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Music & Music Technology from the University of Oklahoma, and was certified as an EM1-DC Technician in electronics. He was currently employed at the Thunderbird Casino as the Executive Director of the Absentee Shawnee Gaming Commission.
For our beloved Titus, family was the most important thing in the world, second only to music -- his life-long passion. He constantly blew people away with his extraordinary guitar skills. Titus was an incredibly talented musician, composer, artist, and an expert in Fortean phenomena. He worked hard at every task he put his brilliant mind to. He will also be remembered for the care he gave to his family and friends at every opportunity, without ever waiting for a special occasion. He was such a sweet and loving soul.
He had an inquisitive mind that was often set upon the task of unraveling the ancient mysteries of the universe, including a categorical knowledge of cryptozoology and other historical events that brought into question whether or not we were alone in the cosmos. Titus also possessed a unique sense of humor coupled with a rapier wit, a combination that often left his friends and family in stitches – laughing so hard until they cried, and then laughing even more when he wouldn’t let up. He loved to make the people around him laugh and was relentless in his ability to summon laughter among the people he chose to spend his time with, and they were all the better because of it, and because of him.
Many of his classic comedic routines included subtle dissections of the semantics we humans pretend to comprehend in daily speech, although Titus knew better. In a bit worthy of George Carlin or Kevin Nealon, if you ever asked Titus what time it was, he would immediately respond with a chambered response …‘You mean right now?’ Or if one were to innocently inquire as to the date, he would answer, ‘Oh, you mean today?’ And if you were lucky enough to be invited out to dinner with him at the one of his favorite Mexican restaurants, he would tell you to ‘Try the Mexican food here, it’s delicious.’ In all, Titus was a student of life and traversed that life with an exceptionally high level of intelligence.
Titus was and continues to be very much loved and adored by his family and friends. He was the rarest of treasures and will be profoundly missed. The depth of our sorrow reflects how deeply our hearts have loved. It is very evident that Titus is greatly, greatly loved.
He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, William Clifton Bruton and Lovel Leroy Carter; grandmother, Leola Bruton; and great-aunt, Philo Bowen.
Those left to cherish Titus’ memory are his adoring mother, Cindy Emerson and stepfather, Mark Emerson of Norman, OK; brothers, Timothy Carter and Stephen Carter; sister, Eunice (Nissy) Carter and brother-in-law, Richard Tarver; father, Wesley Carter; grandmother, Lillie Carter; great-uncle, Wayne Bruton; uncle, Dewey Bruton; aunt, Barbara Bruton; cousins, Melissa (Bruton) Smith, Sherry Bruton-Mendel, Susan Bruton-Shehadeh, JoAnn Cline Cole; and special cherished friends, Nico Cortest and family, and Loc Do.
Memorial Services will be 2:00 p.m., Friday, September 24, 2021 at Cooper Funeral Home Chapel under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home of Tecumseh. Please join the celebration of Titus's life through Cooper Funeral Home’s Facebook page for live streaming of the service.
