Maxine Elizabeth (Bennett) Carter
December 10, 1917 ~ August 24, 2017

Maxine Elizabeth (Bennett) Carter passed away peacefully in her sleep on August 24, 2017.

She was born to JD and Mae Bennett on Dec. 10, 1917, in Ripley. In 1929, the family moved to Enid where Maxine graduated from Enid High School in 1935, and from Enid Business College in 1937. 

She married Ray Elvin Carter on June 30, 1938.

While Elvin Carter was in Eritrea, Africa, during WWII, from early 1942 until late 1943, for Douglas Aircraft, Maxine and her sister LaVeda Bennett owned and operated a parachute sales and service business on Love Field, in Dallas, Texas. 

Upon returning from Africa, Elvin and Maxine opened Carter Paint Co. which they owned and operated until 1978. 

After selling the store, they enjoyed and spent most of their time traveling. In 1999, Maxine suffered a stroke. 

She is preceded in death by her husband Ray Elvin Carter, who died Feb. 1, 2008, and son Ray L. Carter of Hilton Head, S.C. who died Feb. 26, 2015.

She leaves behind son, Larry L. Carter of Edmond, daughter-in-law, Barbara Doiron of Hilton Head, S.C. (widow of son Ray L. Carter), granddaughter, Nancy L. Shaw of Guthrie, granddaughter, Stephanie L. Carter of Savanna, Ga., and great-granddaughter Alexis C. Shaw of Guthrie. 

Extended family members include nieces and nephews, Vernon, Ted and Curt Finney; Ann Shank and Helen Knight.
