Woodward, Okla. — John B Carmichael, DDS passed away from this life Tuesday, September 3, 2013.
Dr. Carmichael was born January 9, 1922 in Henryetta, OK to James Guy and Sylvia (Baker) Carmichael.
He received his undergraduate work at Oklahoma A&M (Oklahoma State University) and received his Dental degree in 1946 at the University of Kansas City (University of Missouri at Kansas City).
He married Betty Jo Temple, Buffalo, Oklahoma, and they have three daughters.
He served as a Captain in the Army Dental Corps, serving in Japan for three years from 1946-1949.
Dr. and Betty Jo moved to Woodward in 1949 where he practiced dentistry until his retirement in 1991.
Dr. Carmichael has held responsible positions in several national, state and local organizations. He was a member of the Oklahoma State board of Dentistry for 9 years and was on the Oklahoma State Board of Health for 22 years. He was a member of both the American College of Dentistry and the International College of Dentistry. Dr. Carmichael was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award from Oklahoma State University in 1993 and the University of Missouri at Kansas City, School of Dentistry in 2003. He has had a strong interest in local and western history, helping establish the Plains Indians and Pioneers Museum and the Fort Supply Historic District. He belonged to the Indian Territory Posse of the Westerners International. Dr. Carmichael has written the history of the Woodward Army Air Field, a short history of Fort Supply fort the Oklahoma Magazine of the Oklahoma Heritage Association, The Trails of Fort Supply for a booklet and for the War Chief of Oklahoma Westerners.
Dr. Carmichael was active in all aspects of life in Woodward, OK. He joined the Woodward Kiwanis Club in 1949 and served as President. He chaired the Woodward Centennial Celebration and was named the Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year for his efforts. He announced the Woodward High School basketball games for over a decade. He served as an Elder in the First Presbyterian Church. Dr. Carmichael stated that when he came to Woodward, he never wanted to leave.
Dr. Carmichael is survived by his wife of 67 years, Betty Jo Temple Carmichael; three daughters, Montressa Jo Elder of Oklahoma City, Marilyn Ann (John) Bruce of Woodland Park, CO, and Macheta Kay (David) Almon of Oklahoma City; five grandchildren, Sam Elder, Sadie Mattox, Jonathan (Tiffany) Almon, Shelby (Joel) Perez, and Dr. Jeremy (Amy) Almon; three great-grandchildren, Fox and Leo Mattox and Stella Perez; one brother, Joe W. (JoSaille) Carmichael and three nephews of Wichita, KS; and a host of friends.
Memorial services will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, September 7, 2013, at the Chisholm Trail Presbyterian Church in Yukon. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dr. Carmichael's name to the OSU Foundation or the Regional Food Bank.
