JR Cansler was born August 31, 1928 in Hollis, Oklahoma to Addie Dorothy (Hawkins) and Silas Robert Cansler. He passed away November 8, 2018 at Elk City, Oklahoma at the age of 90 years, 2 months, and 8 days.
JR grew up in the Hollis area where he attended school. He left school to help his family on the farm and was active in trapping and selling pelts. JR enlisted in the United States Army and was stationed in New Foundland and Greenland before his discharge in 1956. During his time of reserve status he was married to Ruby Lee McDonald on May 9, 1953 in Sayre, Oklahoma. After his discharge he and Ruby moved to Houston, Texas where he attended school and received his RCA journeyman certificate. They later moved to Midwest City, Oklahoma where he worked for Montgomery Wards and Sight and Sound until his retirement in 1990. He moved to Burns Flat where he enjoyed hunting, fishing, fly fishing, playing the banjo, fiddle and the mandolin and also creating indian artifacts in the traditional ways.
He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, Ruby and 12 brothers and sisters.
He is survived by 2 children, Kriss Smith and husband, Kevin, Burlingame, KS and Joe Cansler and wife, Donna, Burns Flat, OK; 5 grandchildren, Brandi Shepherd, Brandon Hollingsworth, Jenna Cansler, Logan Cansler and Lexi Cook and husband, Kelby; numerous great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
