William Edwin Callhan

William Edwin Callahan, age 77, of Mangum, passed away early Thursday morning, March 19, 2009, at Mangum Community Hospital.

Mr. Callahan was born on May 20, 1931, in Hobart, Oklahoma to Clyde and Sadie (Banker) Callahan. Moving to California as a small child, he graduated from high school in San Diego. Shortly after graduation, he moved back to Kiowa County where he farmed with his grandfather. On July 27, 1950, Bill joined the United States Marine Corp and served during the Korean War until his discharge on July 26, 1954. During this time he was awarded, the Korean Service Medal with five stars, Silver Star Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Navy Occupation Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. After his discharge, he moved back to Kiowa County where he farmed with his grandfather for a short time. In 1955, he met and married Jean Strange on February twenty-sixth and they moved to the Reed Community where they purchased a ranch. In the mid 1960�s Bill moved to Mangum where he resided until his death. A member of the First Baptist Church of Mangum and the American Legion, Bill loved riding horses, taking his grandchildren fishing and teaching his grandchildren the values of life.

Preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Pat.

He is survived by three children, Debbie Raison and husband Terry of Norman, George Callahan and wife Valerie of Bozeman, Montana and Kelly Callahan of Dallas, Texas; seven grandchildren, Edward Raison, Kevin Raison, Kinston Callahan, Karisa Callahan, Kyler Callahan, Kaitlyn Callahan and Even Wagner; one great grandson, Gaige Raison; one sister, Carol Girgus of New Jersey; three brothers, Milton Lloyd Callahan and wife Patti of Tennessee, Charles Callahan and wife Barbara of Oklahoma City and Tommy Callahan of Utah along with many other relatives and friends.

Memorial services for Bill Callahan will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 22, 2009, at the Greer Funeral Home Chapel with George Callahan officiating. The family will greet friends at the funeral home from 2 until 3 p.m. before the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the Mangum First Baptist Church�s Coat of Many Colors benevolent program or to Clothes for Needy Children in care of First National Bank of Mangum.
