Sammy L Byrd, son of John L. and Betty (Smith) Byrd, was born April 30, 1946 in Stilwell, Oklahoma and departed this life on Saturday, October 17, 2015 in Proctor, Oklahoma at the age of 69 years.
He was a simple family man, who loved life and loved his family. He was a hard working man, who loved being outside. He was always busy working on his yard, moving rocks and tinkering around in his shop. When he was inside, he would usually be drinking coffee and reading his Bible.
Sammy gave his life to the Lord in 1980. Some of his favorite memories were times at Indian Mission with special services that would last until late night.
He loved his wife of 45 years, Lillie Mae and all of his kids, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Sammy was very fond of Marissa Carey, which he called her bunny and it would always make his day when he would see her.
Sammy served in the U.S. Army in 1968-1969. He spent 5 months in Vietnam. During this time, he received 6 medals: 2 Purple Hearts, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal and Sharp Shooter. He was proud of his accomplishments in the Army.
Sammy will be missed by all of his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents: John and Betty Byrd, Ocie Bird, Wesley Bird, Janie Grayson and Lila Gonzales.
Sammy is survived by his wife of 45 years: Lillie Mae (Riddle) Byrd of the home in Bunch, OK, children: Jimmy Dale Riddle and wife Antoinette of Stilwell, OK, Thelma Soap and husband Larry Don, Jerry Byrd, Gary Byrd and wife Lisa, all of Bunch, Shelly Carey and husband Tim of Proctor, OK, Kevin Byrd and wife Amanda of Bunch, Jr. Byrd of Bunch, 20 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services at 2 pm on Friday, October 23, 2015 at New Life Church, Stilwell, OK with Bro. Blue Hothouse officiating. Interment followed at the Fayetteville National Cemetery, Fayetteville, AR under the direction of Roberts/Reed-Culver Funeral Home, Stilwell,
