Alice (Clay) Butler

Alice (Clay) Butler
October 25, 1932 ~ January 22, 2015

Alice [Clay] Butler, aka "Tee Honey" was born in New Orleans , LA on October 25, 1932, daughter of Jack Clay Sr, a Lone Shoreman on the Mississippi River and Jennie Spears Clay a housewife and mother of nine children.

When her mother died unexpectedly leaving five small children, she dropped out of school and stepped in to become a second mom to her siblings. She either raised or was a babysitter for her numerous nieces and nephews, long before she had a family of her own. She married Edwin Joseph Butler in 1960 and had 3 children, Karen, Edwin and Shelly. Throughout their marriage she traveled across the U.S. and Europe during his service in the U.S. Army. Her unfailing support and understanding helped to make possible her husband's lasting contribution to the nation. They divorced in 1997.

She worked for Walter Drake & Sons in Colorado Springs, CO as a Label Shipper and a short period for Lewis Mgmt. as a custodian at Fort Sill, OK. In 1981 she went back to school and obtained her GED but her years of knowledge and experience expanded beyond books. Her greatest contribution and proudest accomplishments were being a sister to her 6 sisters and 2 brothers, a mother, a grandmother of 4 grandchildren and great-grandmother of 3 great grandchildren. Her favorite past time was reading; bring her a newspaper from any city/country, no matter how old it was and she would read every page! She also loved arts and crafts.

She was a woman like no other. She nurtured us, cheered us, disciplined us; Yes, belts and wooden spoons were used. She fought for us, and at times drove us crazy, but hers was an Unconditional Love. Her home was filled with fun, food, love, laughter, tears, hugs, support and strength. She was and will continue to be a powerful influence in our lives.

"Be strong and courageous...for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you."
Deuteronomy 31:6
