Richard J. "Dick" Burney

May 31, 1949 ~ Sep 2, 2009

A celebration of the life of Richard J. “Dick” Burney, 60, was held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, September 9 at Crossings Community Church, Oklahoma City.

Born May 31, 1949 in Gainesville, Texas, the son of Bud and Lynn Burney, he died Wednesday, September 2, 2009.

A graduate of Ardmore High School, Mr. Burney attended Emporia State, Emporia, Kansas, to pursue a bachelor’s degree in music. He later earned a master’s degree in trumpet performance from Emporia State and Administration in Education from the University of Oklahoma. He was a dedicated educator, being a band director, high school principal and superintendent of schools for the past 38 years. Furthermore, he was an incredible trumpet player and one of the best golfers around.

Survivors include his wife, Darla; three sons and daughters-in-law, Craig and Cammie, Brian and Beth, and Davin and Amberlea; a daughter and son-in-law, Ashely and Shawn; a twin brother and sister-in-law, Pat and Ginger Burney; nephew, Doug Burney; niece, Dawn McMahon and family; aunt, Kathleen; a special sister and brother-in-law, Billie and Garry Steiner and family; and a host of very special friends. However, his pride and joy were his 10 beautiful grandchildren he loved and adored more than life itself.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Crossings Music Ministry.

This obituary included a picture of Mr. Burney.
