William "Elmo" Burks

Apr 25, 1925 ~ Dec 26, 2014

Elmo Burks was born on April 25, 1925 in Delhi, Oklahoma to Newell Mae (O’Brien) and Sydney "Shorty" Clarence Burks. He passed away on December 26, 2014 in Elk City, Oklahoma at the age of 89 years, 8 months, and 1 day.

Elmo was raised just outside of Delhi with his identical twin brother Woody, brothers, Frank and Vergil, and their older sister, Derotha. He made some lifelong friends from that rural community. He graduated from Delhi High School in 1943. After graduation Elmo joined the Army Corp of Engineers and spent time in Guam building the airstrip. After serving in the Army he and his brother, Woody, began working as carpenters, making bluegrass music, and playing on multiple semi-pro baseball teams.

On July 10, 1948 Elmo married Francile Yvonne (Stewart) Burks from Vega, Texas. Early in their marriage, Elmo and Fran moved to Oklahoma City where Elmo began working for Tinker Air Force Base. They had 4 children Cecil, Carolyn, Billy and Mickie. Ultimately, the young family ended up settling down in Elk City, Oklahoma in 1959. While Elmo was a great husband, father and grandfather, he was inseparable from his twin brother Woody. The two spent all of their lives together-except for the time Elmo was in the service. Early on they worked as framing carpenters and finish carpenters; and eventually, the two ended up obtaining their certifications as land surveyors. Shortly after being certified, the twins started Burks Brothers Surveyors. Up until their retirement in 1998, Elmo and Woody surveyed much of the land throughout Elk City and Western Oklahoma.

Elmo was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Fran, his brothers Woody and Frank, his son Billy, his grandson Robby. He leaves behind his brother Vergil, his older sister Derotha, 3 children, 11 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren who all carry his loving footprint in their hearts.
