Phillip Glen Burkhalter was born to Glen Edward and Charlene Sue (Stone) Burkhalter on November 17, 1960 in Amarillo, Texas and passed to his eternal home October 19, 2017 near Buffalo, OK.
Phillip graduated from Granite High School in 1979. Phillip was continually gathering skills. He spent summers on the custom harvest crew for the Caid family of Granite, following the harvest north into the Dakotas. He spent time working for Petzold Farms also of Granite, several years with the City of Granite and a short time in the oil field in the mid-eighties. Every stop along the way he gathered life-long friends.
Phillip was "Dad" to two boys, Wesley Jay, born in August of 1983 and Robert Wayne born in April of 1986; "Papaw" to Delaney and he was super excited for the expected birth of Robert's first child in April.
In 1984 he began his career as a corrections officer with Oklahoma State Reformatory in Granite. In 1988 Phillip (Burk) designed the Oklahoma State Reformatory Insignia Patch that is still used today. Working alongside schoolmates, he retained the nickname "Burks" and gained a new nickname "Dawg". In December 1988, Phillip transferred to the newly opened William S. Key Correctional Center in Ft. Supply where he was promoted to Lieutenant. During his twenty years of service with the Oklahoma Department of Corrections (William S. Key Correctional Center) he served as CERT Commander, Received Officer of the Month and Supervisor of the Year numerous times. Many of his co-workers and friends in Ft. Supply knew him simply by the shortened nickname "Burk". Phillip retired on January 1st 2005.
It was at William Key that Burk met Donna Brannon and they married December 12, 2003 in Woodward and made their home in Ft. Supply. He enjoyed riding motor cycles with Donna and vacations riding across the country.
He owned Coyote Cartage, a parts delivery route business, delivering in western Oklahoma and into Kansas. After retiring from corrections, he worked for the Town of Ft. Supply and later drove trucks for Woodward Concrete.
Phillip took pride in every area of his life. His family was most important and he always beamed with pride as he recalled memories with his boys, as well as Donna and Delaney. During the last few years he spent weekends renovating family houses with his brother Randy. He was quite a craftsman and left many beautiful projects as proof. Burk truly enjoyed interacting with people and was always ready to spend time with friends. No one could tell a story with the attention to detail, animation and sound effects as Phillip. His bear hugs were anticipated and treasured by family members!
Phillip was proud of his fifteen years of service with the volunteer firemen at Ft. Supply and often worked long hours fighting wildfires with the crew. He also served several years as Assistant Fire Chief. He earned his Firefighter 1 Status as well as his First Responder status. He was awarded the Ft. Supply Fire Department Medal of Valor 2009, the Ft. Supply Fire Department Medal of Valor 2011, the Ft. Supply Fire Department Medal of Valor Award 2013 and the Ft. Supply Fire Department Meritorious Service Award 2013.
