Leland R. "Jack" Bull

Leland R. "Jack" Bull
August 11, 1926 ~ April 2, 2022

Jack Bull, 95 year old Mooreland resident, entered Heaven on April 2, 2022. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, April 8, 2022 at the First United Methodist Church of Mooreland. Private family burial will follow. Arrangements are under the direction of the Billings Funeral Home.

On August 11, 1926, the first of seven children was born to John and Encie (Mead) Bull in Luther, Michigan. His parents named him Leland R. Bull, but an uncle took one look at him and said, "No. His name should be Jack." Hence, his nickname Jack Bull stayed with him for the remainder of his life.

In the summer of 1931, the family moved to Reed City, Michigan. It was here that Jack started kindergarten and graduated high school in May 1944. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on June 3, 1944. He was assigned to Great Lakes, Illinois, Boot Camp just twenty days later, and by January 1945, he entered U.S. Submarine School. That spring he arrived in Guam where he was assigned to Submarine Division 202 aboard the USS Proteus - AS19.

In August 1945 while serving on the USS Proteus, World War II ended. One of his most memorable experiences was witnessing the surrender ceremony signing aboard the USS Missouri.

That November, Jack departed Yokosuka, Japan, for home. He spent only a short time in the service but traveled many miles and saw many things that remained with him always. He met many lifelong friends and reunited with them at sub vet reunions, which was a highlight that he and Twila looked forward to.

Jack's growing up in Reed City during his teen years was typical of all families during the pre-World War II years. He had his first job at the age of 12, getting up at 4:30 a.m. and delivering milk for 10 cents a day. He loved skating, flying, hunting, fishing, gardening, and singing 1940's songs. He never met a stranger and could remember names and faces. He was interested in everyone and wanted to help others in some way.

After the war, Jack went to work for Henry Dobben as a Chevrolet parts man in a Chevrolet agency in Reed City. In 1962, he began work for Michigan/Wisconsin. He was transferred to the Mooreland plant in October of that same year. In 1981, he went to work for Arco Oil & Gas in Woodward until he retired in 1991.

Shortly after arriving in Oklahoma, he met Twila Cox. They were married on December 31, 1964, and were married for 57 wonderful years. They made their home in Mooreland.

Jack loved God, his family, and his country. He was a devoted Christian and lived his life giving God all the glory for all his blessings. He was a perfectionist with everything he did. He stood by his word, and if he said he would do something, he did.

His church was the highlight of his life, and he held many leadership positions. He was humble yet appreciative of everything he had. He read his Bible and prayed every day, memorized Bible verses, and loved the Lord with all his heart. He was a remarkable person, and his family praises God for allowing them to love and cherish their wonderful memories of him. He was so special.

Jack is proceeded in death by his parents; brother Bob Bull and wife Alice; sister Joann Miller and husband Jack; brother Dave Bull and wife Pat; brother Dale Bull; brother-in-law Ron Whitman; infant son Steven Wayne Bull; and father and mother-in-law Wayne and Fay Cox, daughter-in-law Linda Bull.

He is survived by his wife, Twila of Mooreland; son Kit Bull and wife Coleen of Reed City; son Travis Bull of Mooreland; grandchildren Craig (Danielle) Bull of DeWitt, Michigan; Kyle Bull of Reed City; and Emily Bull of Woodward; great-grandchildren Owen, Lauren, and Morgan Bull of DeWitt, Michigan; brother John Bull (Judy) of Newaygo, Michigan; sister Jeanie Whitman of Reed City; sister-in-law Norma Bull of Reed City; brother and sister-in-law Eldon and Lois Cox of Mooreland; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mooreland First United Methodist Church Mission Building Fund with the funeral home accepting the contributions.
