Dwight Buffalo Head

Dwight Buffalo Head
October 15, 1948 - September 3, 2023

Dwight Dawson Buffalo Head, Thiumba Zhinga, a member of the Hisada Clan, was born on October 15, 1948 to Roy Buffalo Head and Dorothy Blueback Buffalo Head in Pawnee, Oklahoma. He entered Heaven's heavenly gates on Sunday, September 3, 2023.

He attended school as a child in Marland, and high school at Chilocco where he graduated in 1967. Dwight served in the U.S. Army for 10 years with many accolades, retiring as a Sergeant. He played a small role in the 1988 film, “The Trial of Standing Bear”. He served on the Ponca Tribal Council intermittently for over 23 years. Dwight was cherished as a Job Coach at the Opportunity Center, and remained in contact with many of the clients and their families. He was a founding employee of the Osage Casino in Ponca City, and had recently retired as Roads Director for the Ponca Tribe in March 2023.

Dwight was a loyal caretaker of the homestead, working the land from the minute he got home from work, until the sun went down. He loved and appreciated the inherited land he lived on. Dwight enjoyed watching OU sports, especially football. He also enjoyed watching Thunder Basketball, and supporting his children and grandchildren in their events. His children’s fondest memory will be his finger tapping on the steering wheel to Redbone, “Come and Get Your Love.” Dwight will be remembered most for his love for Jesus. He served as a Roadman of the Native American Church beginning under the tutelage of David Buffalo Head, Simon Horse Chief Eagle, and Roland Noear.

Those left behind to cherish his memory are: wife Judith Buffalo Head of the home, children Karla Besaw and Daniel Mitchell from Everett, WA, Nicole Cordova from Virginia Beach, VA, Matthew Cordova from Ponca City, OK, Sara Bell from Ponca City, OK, and Appearing Buffalo Head from Edmond, OK, over 20 grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and his little sister Mary Hamilton of Ponca City, OK. He was preceded in death by his parents and 10 siblings.

Funeral services will be held at the Homestead-3001 W. Cowboy Hill Rd. Ponca City, OK on Wednesday, September 6, 2023 with a public viewing at 1 o’clock, and burial services to follow, with Pastor Jim White officiating.
