Jeneva Jo Reece Brown or "Chick" as she was known to family and friends, was born August 7, 1922 to Calvin Lafayette and Sallie Alma Pulliam Reece in Roff, OK. She passed away Saturday, March 5, 2011 at the age of 88 years and 7 months.
She grew up in the Garvin County area and on October 12, 1941 was married to Jack Brown of Pauls Valley, OK. Jack had enlisted in the army and Chick and Jack were living in Ft. Leonard Wood, MO when Pearl Harbor was bombed. The following October their son Jack Douglas was born and 7 months after that Jack was sent to the Pacific Arena until his return in 1945. During those years, Chick proved herself to be a strong and capable young woman working and supporting their son. After Jack's return they had 2 more children, Jeanne and Brenda, and they established their home at Whitebead and later on in Pauls Valley. During the 1960's they lived in Malta, Greece and Egypt. She enjoyed revisiting Malta and Egypt later in life. After surviving the May 3, 1999 tornado that destroyed her home in Oklahoma City, Chick relocated to Norman where she has resided since.
Just like those early years Chick proved herself again as a strong and capable woman after Jack's death in 1969. She began working for the Oklahoma State Employment Service where she stayed until her retirement in 1987.
She had many nicknames...Jeneva was her birth name but was known as Chick to friends and family, Mimi to her grandchildren and great grandchildren, and JJ to her work colleagues while working for the State of Oklahoma. She loved to travel and did a great deal of it, especially with her sister Reba. She loved to dance, go to parties, garden, and she loved family reunions. She also enjoyed wearing hats. She had a very strong sense of family and loved visiting with all family members. Mimi adored her grandchildren and delighted in being the great grandmother of 5.
Chick was able to live independently until 4 weeks ago, even though her physical health had started to gradually deteriorate over the last few years. Mentally she was as sharp as a tack and she was proud of that. There are many things about her we will miss and we will never forget her strong independent spirit.
Chick was preceded in death by her husband Jack and her granddaughter Allison Pratt. She was also preceded in death by her parents and 5 brothers and 5 sisters.
Her survivors are her children: Jack Douglas Brown and his wife Sara of San Jose, Costa Rica; Jeanne Pratt of Oklahoma City; and Brenda Johnson and her husband Kent of Oklahoma City; 6 grandchildren: Cara Wells and her husband Joe of Tulsa; Kent Brown of Ardmore; Holly Pratt of Oklahoma City; Roman Brown and his wife Victoria of Norman; Ryan Pratt and his wife Monika of Norman and Emily Johnson of Brooklyn, NY; 5 great grandchildren: Madeleine and Alton Wells of Tulsa; Terra and Bonnie Brown of Norman; and Garrett Pratt of Norman. She is also survived by her brother E.R. Reece and his wife Nancy of Norman and sister Joy Tate and her husband Bob of Oklahoma City; brother-in-law Clarence Olson of Norman and 2 sisters-in-law: Veatrice Reece of Pauls Valley and Camilla Reece of Newcastle, and many, many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, all of whose company she greatly enjoyed.
