Columbus - Sandra Kay Britton, formerly of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, passed peacefully in her sleep on September 14, 2021, in Columbus, Ohio, with her loving son Brad by her side.
She was born December 29, 1936, in Coffeyville, Kansas, at the home of her maternal grandparents, to Louise (Cronk) and Clifford Price. She grew up there, Kansas City, KS, and Bartlesville OK.
She graduated with a B.A. in Elementary Education from Oklahoma State University (the "real" OSU, she would forever tease her Ohio State Buckeye friends… and wear her Orange OSU ball cap to taunt them further). She was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority. After graduation, she taught school in Cincinnati, Ohio, at the old Windsor Elementary School in the Walnut Hills neighborhood, and in several locations in Bartlesville. She dearly loved children and said they taught her as much as she taught them. She also worked for Phillips Petroleum Company and Cities Service Company.
She spent almost 30 years as a Realtor in the Akron, Ohio, area, first with Coldwell Banker and later with Howard Hanna Smythe Cramer. She sold many homes, concentrating in the Tallmadge/Stow/Kent/east Akron market.
She volunteered for years with Meals On Wheels, and was involved in the Tallmadge Country Study Club, the Tallmadge Garden Club, and participated in as many bridge foursomes as she could fit in. She also was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
In later years, she enjoyed multiple trips to Europe with friends and family.
Sandra's grandchildren describe her as a "free spirit." She was a quirky and colorful person who never met a stranger. Always positive and in a "sorority rush party" mood, she would carry an Army cot and sleep in the corner of a room at anyone's home who invited her for a holiday. She was adventurous and would try almost anything. Her grandchildren remember her for sleepovers that included sausage pizza and root beer floats. She couldn't cook or sing a lick, but they remember her perfectly wrapped presents and precision handwriting. She loved flowers and houseplants, the chipmunks and cardinals in her backyard, whiskey sours, travel, holidays, self-deprecating humor, laughter, newspapers, convenience store hot dogs, bridge, college football, shopping at Talbots, her vast network of friends, and most of all, daily doses of black coffee and chocolate.
She is survived by her sons: Ross Britton, of Austin, TX; daughter-in-law, Kim Britton, of Georgetown, TX; Brad Britton (Victoria Rentel), of Upper Arlington, OH. Grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Erica (Eddie) Cantu, and daughter Lillian, of Dripping Springs TX; Shane Britton (Miranda) and son Emmett, of College Station TX; J.T. Britton, of Austin TX; George Britton and Lydia Britton, of Upper Arlington OH. Sister, Jacquie Anning, of Prairie Village, KS; Nephews, Chris Anning, of Mission KS; Doug (Kirk Isenhour) Anning of Kansas City MO; her beloved cousins from childhood, Jill Glanville, of Houston TX, and Jack Dreyfus, of Peoria AZ.
She would always describe herself as a "Kansas girl" through and through. She loved to tell stories of running the brick streets of Coffeyville with her sister and friends. We hope she is now doing that again!
The family would like to thank The Forum at Knightsbridge, Columbus OH, for the outstanding care they gave Sandra over the last nine years.
Cremation has taken place; in lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Millennium Fund for Children, c/o the Akron Community Foundation (akroncf.org), Sandra's favorite charity, and play "Flight of the Bumblebee," Sandra's favorite song.
