David Jay Bookout was born on February 27, 1959, in Stroud, Oklahoma, to Calvin and Martha Bookout. He passed away on April 27, 2026, in Tahlequah, Oklahoma.
Celebration of Life Service will be 10 AM, Saturday, May 2,2026 at Tahlequah Middle School Gymnasium., 871 Pendleton Street Tahlequah, OK. 74464 There will be no public viewing or visitation.
David was raised in Depew, Oklahoma, where he attended school and formed the strong work ethic that would guide him throughout his life. David participated in sports, performing arts and Boy Scouts. After graduating from high school, he earned his associate degree from Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College, working in the oil fields during the summers to pay his way. He went on to complete both his bachelor's and master's degrees in education at Northeastern State University. David dedicated 39 years to education, serving as a teacher, coach, mentor, and administrator. He spent 10 years at Oaks Schools before continuing his career at Tahlequah Junior High and Middle School for 29 years. His sense of humor, dedication, and hard work earned him the respect of not only the students, but the faculty, staff, and administration as well. Beyond the classroom, he gave his time as a referee for volleyball, football, and basketball for many years, impacting countless students and athletes. David was a gifted vocalist specializing in classic country music. He enjoyed grilling, traveling, playing cards and spending time with friends and family.
In 2014, David married Lisa, the love of his life and his closest friend. Their marriage was built on a deep and enduring bond, marked by laughter, fun, and unwavering support for one another. David cherished Lisa wholeheartedly, and their relationship was a true partnership - rooted in friendship, strengthened by love, and evident to all who knew them. He is survived by his wife, Lisa Bookout; his sons, Joshua D. Bookout (Madelyn Sewell), James C. Bookout, and Jake Vader; his siblings, Diane Allred (Gary), Dennis Bookout (Pam), Donna Gerner (David), and his twin brother, Daryl Bookout (Terri); his grandchildren, Violet Bell and Penelope Bookout; his great-grandchildren, Anthony and Brady; his aunts, Sue Miri and Wanda Wilson; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Calvin and Martha Bookout. David will be remembered as a devoted family man, educator, mentor, and friend. In keeping with the way he lived his life - always giving to others - he continued that legacy through organ donation. Those who knew him will never forget his familiar and heartfelt saying: "Get'em here, get'em fed, get'em home."

Hart Funeral Home will be recording the Celebration of Life Service and you may watch service online later Saturday afternoon by coming to the obituary.
