Virginia "Ginger" Kay Walling Blockcolski was born on November 16th, 1943, and began her next journey on January 27th, 2020, peacefully and surrounded by family.
There was nothing Ginger liked better than an interesting conversation with a good or new friend. She could have an engaging conversation with anyone. While the external voice has now been silenced, her words and love remain within the hearts of everyone who cared about her.
Ginger was a graduate of Phillips University and engaged in various studies at the University of Oklahoma and Wichita State University, along with a lifelong love of reading and learning from others. She was a social studies and geography teacher in both Wichita, KS, and Enid, OK, for several years. She then began a career working as a coordinator to train and support the caregivers of people with developmental disabilities at Enid State School, which became Northern Oklahoma Resource Center. She finished her career traveling the state as a trainer of staff working with people with developmental disabilities for the State of Oklahoma and as a Red Cross instructor.
Ginger was a lover of visual art, and after retirement was a docent for the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art at The University of Oklahoma in Norman. She always found time to visit local art museums and artists in her extensive travels throughout her life, and would financially support many of her favorite artists by purchasing their works. Ginger was open to all, be it a movie star she met at the Taos Film Festival or a young person in need.
She is survived by her husband and partner of over 55 years, Lew Blockcolski of Norman, Oklahoma, her daughter and son-in-law Shannon and Chris James of Scappoose, Oregon, and Sarah Stahlecker and her partner Melvin Whitehouse of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She is also survived by her sister Judy Rasmussen; her nephew and his family Blake, Amy, Meredith, Hadley and Bridget Rasmussen and nephew Bret Rasmussen, all of Houston, Texas; and niece Beth Rasmussen of San Antonio, Texas. Other survivors include her brother and sister-in-law Lester and Mary Jo Arnold and niece Peggy Arrington in Enid, Oklahoma, and Darren and Jan Arnold of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. She is also survived by the latest of many pets in her life that she loved dearly, Gomez.
A Celebration of Life will be held at noon on Sunday, February 16th, at the Morning Star Center for Spiritual Living in the Norman Senior Center, 329 S. Peters Avenue, Norman, OK, where she was an active member and developed many deep friendships. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Docent Corps of the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art. Gifts should be sent to FJJMA, C/O Museum Docent Fund, 555 Elm Ave. Norman, OK. 73019-3003.
