Eugene D. Blalock

Eugene D. Blalock
February 12, 1918 ~ 2010

Eugene D. Blalock, longtime civic leader and construction developer in Pauls Valley, was born February 12, 1918, in Springer, Oklahoma. His parents were H.E. and Inez Phillips Blalock, now deceased. He moved to Pauls Valley in 1929 and it was his home except for brief absences to fulfill college, naval, or contracting duties.

He was a member of the fabled Pauls Valley football team that was Tri-State Champion in 1935. He was captain of the Pauls Valley Panthers in 1936 and twice selected All State center.

Graduating in 1937, he attended George Washington University in Washington D.C. before transferring to the University of Oklahoma on a football scholarship. He was a freshman on the first OU team to play in the Orange bowl in Miami, Florida.

He married his high school sweetheart, Theresa Landers, in 1940 and they celebrated their 71st anniversary in 2011. World War II interrupted their lives in 1941 and he enlisted in the Navy Seabees. He spent over two years in the South Pacific war zone as a Chief Petty Officer. His unit built the first chapel on Guam and he was the first person baptized in this chapel.

A tireless civic leader and church worker, he was treasurer for the First United Methodist church, member of the Administrative and finance boards, Sunday School Teacher, and M.Y.F. sponsor. He belonged to the American Legion, Pauls Valley Golf Association, Order of Elks, and Treasurer of the Rotary Club. He was owner and President of Eugene Blalock agency, Oklahoma well Servicing, and Swade, Inc. He was inducted into the Investors Congress based on his numerous patents, and listed in Who's Who in Technology in 1979 for his invention and patent in sludge control collection for water plants. Other achievements include the development of Denson Heights housing addition along with commercial buildings, churches, water plants, and micro-wave relay stations. The commercial structures legacy includes Kerr Mcgee substation in Wynnewood, Pauls Valley airport Administrative Building, Lake Murray State Lodge swimming pool, electrical substations in Oklahoma, Texas, Missouri & Wyoming.

Family members include his wife, Theresa, and daughters Retired Judge Candace Blalock and Daniel Sprouse, Phyllis Boone and Larry, & Christy Meier and Norman. His son Paul, granddaughter Chezley Howle, and two great-grandchildren Aisley & Denson Scruggs preceded him in death. He was blessed with grandchildren Ambre Gooch & Ron, Chelsea Boone and Patrick, Brittany Scruggs & Kevin, Justin Sprouse, Alaina Howle, and great-grandchildren Talor and Cassidi Gooch and Savanna Bolen.

In his free-time, he was an accomplished golfer and rarely lost at dominoes! Accomplished as he was, his greatest joy was his family. In reminiscing , all of his grandchildren remember Papa making them colored popcorn, playing card games and dominoes (always allowing them to win), fixing anything broken, rubbing backs, always smiling, always hugging, always loving.

A much admired man by his family, his friends, his country, his church...his earthly presence transcends now to his heavenly home among the angels...but his spirit will inherit our souls into eternity... Until we meet again!

Memorial funeral services will be held Friday, December 16, 2011 at 1:00 pm at First United Methodist Church officiated by Rev. Mark Watson. Services for cremation are under the direction of Stufflebean-Coffey Funeral Home.
