Wilma Lorene "Susie"(Eaken) Akers Black

August 25, 1920 ~ February 16, 2004

Wilma (Susie) Lorene Akers Black of Visalia died Monday, February 16, 2004, at Tarzana Medical Center from complications of pneumonia. Services will be held Monday, February 23, 2004, 10:00 a.m., at Greenlawn Memorial Chapel, 3700 River Blvd., Bakersfield.

Susie was born August 25, 1920, to John and Ethel Eaken near Apache, OK. She grew up and was educated in Chickasha, Oklahoma. She attended Oklahoma College for Women. She met and married Tom Akers, May 25, 1941. She and Tom and their young son, Tommy, moved to Bakersfield in 1946. Three more children were born: Alyce, Peggy and John. Sue was active in her children’s lives and helping Tom Succeed in his job as a cotton marketer. She was President of the P. T. A. and also President of Kern County Cotton Wives. Susie and Tom were married over twenty-five years. They both continued to celebrate special occasions and holidays with their children and families.

In 1971 Sue married John S. Black and embarked on a new adventure. John soon retired and Mobil Oil Corportation. She and John lived in Redondo Beach and Indian Wells, CA, Wimberley, TX and Bakersfield. She used her remarkable decorating skills designing and furnishing their homes. Sue and John loved to entertain family and friends.

She lived the past ten years in Visalia. She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church and St. Ann's Guild.

Susie was known as elegant, gracious and classy. She was a socially astute women who made and developed relationships all her life. She was a student of character, endlessly interested in people, their kin and friends. She was tolerant and compassionate, a live-and-let-live woman. Sue was artistic and aesthetically gifted, particularly in the areas of interior design and fashion. It was often said that "Susie is a beautiful lady inside and out." She loved to read, and enjoyed 40's big band and country western music. She had a fun loving spirit. She always put her children first and loved them unconditionally.

Her husband, John Black preceded Sue in death, as did her brothers, Haskel, Harold and Glen Eakin. Her granddaughter, Casey Ann Turner also died before her. She leaves behind her son, Tom Akers and Yvonne Golston of La Union, NM; daughter, Alyce Akers and Patrick Nichelson of Chatsworth, CA; daughter, Peggy Akers Westberg and Tom Westberg of Paso Robles, CA; son, John Akers and Sharla Akers of Visalia, CA; grandchildren, Audrie and John Fennema of Tucson, AZ, Drew Blackmon and Genie Simpson of Northridge, CA, Rita Turner of San Luis Obispo, CA, Grant Blackmon of Chatsworth, CA, Jonna Akers of Bakersfield, Allyson Akers of NYC, Alex Akers of Goshen, KY, Jessica, David, Sara, Blake and Brandon of Visalia; great grandchildren, Gregory Fennema of Tucson, AZ, and Lili Turner of San Luis Obispo, CA; her sister, Rue Dell Willey; nieces, nephews and many lifelong friends survive her.

Words cannot express what Sue meant to her family or how much she will be missed.

She had cancer three times in her life. She fought and beat these illnesses with her positive attitude and tenacious spirit. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Susie Black's name to the American Cancer Society.
