Melvin Wayne Black

July 24, 1936 ~ July 28, 2010

GREENSBORO - Melvin Wayne Black of Greensboro died Wednesday, July 28, in Hillsville, Virginia, as a result of an automobile accident.

Melvin was born in Hydro, Oklahoma, on July 24, 1936, to Noel and Belle Black (both deceased).

Melvin met the woman of his dreams, Sidonna Faye Thomas, in the 6th grade, and they were married on July 20, 1956. He worked for Conoco Oil Company for 30 years and moved to Greensboro in 1975.

Melvin is survived by his loving wife, Sidonna; oldest son and daughter-in-law Jeff and Emily Black; middle son and daughter-in-law Keith and Aprille Black; daughter and son-in-law Jennifer and Karl Lewis; brother Jim Black of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; sister-in-law Barbara Duke of Hydro, Oklahoma; brother-in-law Bill Thomas and wife Cindy of Albuquerque, New Mexico; loving grandchildren Courtney and Marshall Camp, Britton Black, Caleb and Emily Black, Allie and Ryan Kelly, Jonathan Black, Emily Lewis, Lydia Lewis, Michael Black, Mason Lewis and Adam Black; niece Diann Grubb and husband Vernon Grubb; and nephew Danny Black and wife Marta.

Melvin was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Greensboro, where he worshipped our Lord, deepened his faith, and demonstrated a devotion to God that was an example to all who knew him.

Melvin also was a longstanding member of Starmount Forest Country Club, where he played golf and tennis, and was an outdoorsman who shared his love of fishing and hunting with his children, grandchildren and friends.

He celebrated his 74th birthday this past Saturday on the river he loved, surrounded by family members.

The funeral service and celebration of life will be held at First Baptist Church on Saturday, July 31, 2010, at 1 p.m. Friends are invited to attend and will be greeted following the service in the church atrium.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the First Baptist Church Youth Choir, First Baptist Church, 1000 W. Friendly Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27401.
