Eugene (Gene) John Bergkamp was born at home on December 24, 1935, to August (Gus) and Olga May Bergkamp in Ost, Kansas.
He attended grade school at St Joe Catholic School, where he spoke German until the 3rd grade. His family moved to Arkansas City, KS, where he attended Sacred Heart Catholic School.
In 1956 he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He was stationed in Germany, and while he was there he was lucky enough to have his brother Quentin stationed with him. Gene served in the Army until 1958. He then served in the Army National Guard until 1964.
In December 1962, he became a father to a baby girl, Teresa Diana Bergkamp, whom he raised as a single father with the help of his family.
In May of 1981, he married Beth Symes Tebow. With this union he became a father figure to five kids whom he loved dearly.
Throughout his life he worked for GE, Apco Oil, Harper Oil and back to GE, from which he retired in 1998.
Gene enjoyed being at the lake with family and friends. His grandchildren have very fond memories of all their fishing adventures. He also enjoyed watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren play football and basketball. He liked to cheer for KU and WSU basketball and the KC Chiefs.
He is survived by his wife, Beth, of the home; children: Dennis and Kathy Tebow of Albuquerque, NM, Kim and Kevin Bushnell, Stacey Hurla and Amy Maphet, all of Pond Creek, OK, Teresa and Reed Overstreet of Enid, OK, Casey and Mandy Tebow of Ponca City, OK; 23 grandchildren; and 42 great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents; 2 sisters, Hilda and May Rose; and a brother, Tim.
There will be a memorial service 2:00 P.M., Tuesday, December 28, 2021, at United Methodist Church, Pond Creek, OK. Memorials may be made to OMRF for cancer research. Arrangements by Wilson Funeral Home, Pond Creek, OK.
