Larry Jack Bedwell was born in Okeene Oklahoma February 6, 1938 to Cleades and Gladys Bedwell. Throughout high school he was actively involved in 4-H, FFA and raising and promoting Shorthorn Cattle. He attended Oklahoma State University, where he received his bachelor degree in Agricultural Education in May of 1961. While attending Oklahoma State University, Jack was recognized as the OSU Outstanding Student Teacher in 1960 as well as the outstanding Graduate in Ag Education that same year. Upon graduation he began teaching Vocational Agriculture in Mutual Ok where he met and married Shirley Cooper of Mutual. During his 13 year career of teaching Vo-Ag he taught in the communities of Perry (and Sumner), Oakwood and Taloga then completed his Professional Teaching experience at Waukomis all of which are located in Oklahoma.
During his Teaching Career, Jack also enjoyed raising show pigs and club lambs. He is particularly remembered by many 4-H and FFA students of that time for his raising of Duroc, Hampshire and crossbred pigs that were very competitive. In fact Jack raised the Grand Champion Barrows at both the Tulsa State Fair and State Fair of Oklahoma as well as many, many County and District shows.
All during the time as a college student and even later as an Ag Teacher Jack remained active as a Shorthorn breeder. Upon returning to the Bedwell family wheat and livestock farm in Okeene, he along with his 3 sons, Jeff, John, and Jerry raised and promoted Shorthorn cattle in addition to show pigs. His involvement with Shorthorn cattle didn’t stop at the production of elite females, for nearly 15 years Jack Bedwell served as the Junior Advisor for the Oklahoma Shorthorn Jr. Association and he participated as both a Board Member and an Officer for the Oklahoma Shorthorn Association of which he was a member nearly his entire life.
In recognition to his service to the Shorthorn breed and his achievements as a Shorthorn breeder Jack was recognized as a “Builder of the Breed” for the American Shorthorn Association in a1986.
He also believed in and took pride in helping Agricultural youth in many ways and for nearly 25 years Jack also served as a member of the Blaine Co. Fair Board as well as a mentor and friend to many that were in the livestock business.
Although Jack had many accomplishments, there was nothing he was more proud of than his sons, and grandchildren. Anyone that met Jack can attest to his love for his family, his Shorthorn cattle and the many friends and students that were such an important part of his life.
Jack is preceded in death by his parents and grandsons Jared, Justin and Tyler Bedwell.
He is survived by his 3 sons and their families Jeff, Diane and Jennifer Bedwell, John, Tracie, Amber, Emily and Jason Bedwell, Jerry, Leslie, Jordan, Caitlin, Lucy and Kayla Bedwell. He is also survived by his life partner John Moon, sister Sherry, and her family, along with many other friends, and family.
Memorials can be made to the Jared & Justin Bedwell Memorial with the Fairview Funeral Home acting as custodian.
