Marjorie Mae (Matthews) Bates

April 15, 1921 ~ September 11, 2012

Mrs. Marjorie Mae Bates, 91, of Bartlesville died at 12:55 PM Tuesday, September 11, 2012.

The daughter of James and Ethel (True) Matthews, Marjorie was born on April 15, 1921 in Strawn, Texas. She graduated from Odessa High School and attended Texas Tech University in Lubbock. After receiving her Bachelor's degree in Zoology, Marjorie began working for Phillips Petroleum in Odessa, Texas. On November 18, 1943, Marjorie Matthews and Bruce Bates were united in marriage in Odessa. She retired in 1945 to begin her family and become a homemaker. Marjorie was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Bartlesville, Tuesday Club, Hillcrest Country Club and the Bartlesville Service League. She enjoyed playing Bridge, golfing and traveling. She loved animals and children. Most of all, Marjorie enjoyed her family and the memories she created with them.

Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents, James and Ethel Matthews of Odessa, Texas. Marjorie is survived by her beloved husband, Bruce L. Bates of Bartlesville, Oklahoma: one daughter, Bettisu Casey and her husband Ed of Bartlesville, her daughter Julie Holbert and husband Todd Parnian, and her son Sam Holbert; son, James Bates and his wife Sharen, of Austin, Texas, their daughter Jamie Dudley and her husband Ben and great grand-son Nolan, and their son Matthew Bates and his wife, Kristin; son, Doug Bates and his wife Janis of Richardson, Texas, and their sons Michael Bates, Garrett Bates, Trevor Bates, and Stefan Bates; son, Richard Bates and his wife Katie of Charlotte, North Carolina; and their daughters Sara Kathryn Bates and Tricia Bates, and their son Brent Bates.

A memorial has been established in honor of Mrs. Marjorie Bates and contribution may be mailed to the First Presbyterian Church, 505 South Dewey, Bartlesville, Oklahoma.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 PM Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church in Bartlesville. Cremation arrangements were provided by the Stumpff Funeral Home & Crematory.
