Ruth Madeline (Schortemeyer) Bass

January 10, 1924 ~ April 26, 2009

Ruth Madeline Bass, resident of Ponca City, passed away Sunday, April 26, 2009 at the Ponca City Medical Center. She was 85.

Ruth was born January 10, 1924 at Lindenhurst, New York, the daughter of Lewis F. Schortemeyer and Ida Jaeger Schortemeyer. She received her early education in the Lindenhurst schools. She began work at an early age and continued working for most of her life. During World War II she was a Rosie the riveter at an aircraft plant. She had also had been employed at a sweater factory, card factory, bicycle factory, and for many years as a sales clerk. She was married to Frederick G. Bass on July 26, 1942 in Lindenhurst. The couple had lived in New York, Florida and Oklahoma. While living in Oklahoma Ruth had been employed as an inspector at the Huffy bicycle plant in Ponca City. In earlier years Ruth was a member of the Eastern Star and the Rebekkah Lodge. She was a member of the Albright United Methodist Church of Ponca City. Her enjoyments included the love of music, flowers, especially roses, playing card games, quilting, various crafts and her time spent with others.

She is survived by her son, Harold Bass and wife, Marcy, of Ponca City; two brothers, Milton and Albert Schortemeyer, of Florida; two grandchildren, Kyle Bass, Ponca City and Jennifer Hodges and husband Todd, Fort Collins, Colorado; two great grandchildren, Ellie and Aidan Hodges; numerous nieces, nephews, other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Frederick, on October 27, 2000; three brothers, Louis, George and Harold Schortemeyer.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 2, 2009 in the First Baptist Church Chapel with the Pastor, Rev. Dr. Michael Seabaugh presiding, assisted by Rev. Joe Robinson, Pastor of the Albright United Methodist Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Grace Memorial Chapel.
